General

  • Small family-run site between Newent and Ross-on-Wye
  • Lots to do; fishing, football, pond, play area, games room and more
  • Steps away from woodland walks

It might be a small site, but you'll find quite the heap to do for big folks and kids at Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park in Ross-on-Wye.

First up there's the fishing... And then there's the playground, in a scenic and spacious setting (check out the site pics) which also comes with a small pond, a five-a-side football pitch, a games room, indoor table tennis and – huzzah! – a treehouse.

Woodland walks are steps away from the site, as Haywood is close to Queens Wood on the edge of the Forest of Dean; and canoeing, kayaking, fishing, golf, horse riding, an indoor pool, mountain biking and tennis are all available in the surrounds.

Haywood is a family-run site a short drive from the M50, between Newent and Ross-on-Wye, and with a decent range of guest amenities including showers, a toilet block, disabled facilities, a washing-up area, chemical disposal and recycling. Gas cylinders and ice pack freezing are also available for guests.

Pubs, restaurants, shops and public transport are ten minutes' walk away.

lovely site, relatively flat, very much a lovely country feel. really enjoyed our stay

    Disliked:

for the size of the site we think that toilet and shower facilities, two of each for both men and women is insufficient for the volume of people using the site.
also the flu/stack of the chemical disposal should be raised to avoid the smell being carried to the vicinity of the site

A nice, quiet site. 15/08/2017

  • Liked:

A quiet, laid-back site, very close to forest walks and a short drive from Ross-on-Wye. The pitch was flat and there was plenty of space so even when the site was busy, it didn't feel crowded. The showers were warm and there was a mop on hand which I liked to use before and after I showered. I also liked the fact that campfires were allowed.

    Disliked:

There were only 2 showers and 2 toilets in the ladies, which meant queues and blocked toilets during busy periods. The showers were a little dated but I liked the fact that there was a separate section to get dressed that stayed dry. The bathroom floor always seemed to be wet, even though it did not rain during our stay, this meant that mud always washed off shoes, leaving the floor very muddy.

Relaxed site with good facilities and fantastic for for kids 14/08/2017

  • Liked:

Facilities were clean and well maintained. Site was very relaxed and we had a BBQ and firepit every night we were there which the kids loved. They also loved the play area. The forest adjacent to the farm was fantastic for dog walking and cycling for the whole family and proved to be an adventure for everyone. Great for exploring the Forest of Dean.

    Disliked:

There was a bit of an eyesore at one point when the bins were overflowing. All the advantages of the site--like it's very relaxed attitude--also means that there are some oddities like a building under construction near the playing field. The shop was never open when we looked.

  • Liked:

The site was spacious and, as it was not busy at the time being a Monday, we were allowed to choose our own pitch. There was slight noise from the motorway but not enough to disturb our sleep. Good play equipment for younger children and a table tennis table for older ones. The owner was very pleasant and helpful and the toilet facilities were fine. Altogether, good value for money.

Local attractions

Woodland walks are seconds away from the farm and four golf courses are within a three-mile radius. Sports centres and swimming pools are a short drive away.

The Malvern Hills and the Brecon Beacons are probably the most visited destinations around this part of the England/Wales border, but plenty of other popular picks are around, like canoeing on the River Wye, wandering around the town of Ross-on-Wye, or fishing on the local lakes.

The Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park also firmly state that the nearby International Centre for Birds of Prey must be visited: it's the oldest birds of prey centre in the world and has lots of opps for seeing many sorts of raptors up close. Go: it's eggcellent.

Pottering around the Forest of Dean is another decent day out: if you're going forestwards, take time to stop off at the ancient woodland site of Puzzlewood and then the Clearwell Caves, mined for thousands of years to extract iron ore and now set up as a mining museum. (We'd also like to point out, just because, that some Doctor Who episodes were filmed here.)

Within driving distance, both Monmouth and Malvern towns are 20 minutes away, and the cities of Hereford and Gloucester within 25.

Must see

  • Eastnor Castle (7.0 miles)
  • Goodrich Castle (8.0 miles)
  • Gloucester Waterways Museum (10.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Westbury Court Garden (8.7 miles)
  • Ashleworth Tithe Barn (8.9 miles)
