General

  • Quiet camping in the Wye Valley three miles from the Welsh border
  • Lake on site for fishing
  • Fire bowls and fuel for hire/sale

Blessed peace and biting fish… serenity seekers and amateur anglers alike can hope for a restfully quiet time at Burhope Farm near Orcop in Herefordshire, where the scenery is stupendous and the by-night stargazing stellar.

Even the uninitiated should get a nibble at the carp-crammed fishing lake here – but if fishing's not your thing, you can simply lie beside the lake or on one of the rustic benches with a book or your own thoughts…

When venturing off site, the farm is close enough to Herefordshire's and Shropshire's old market towns and active outdoor options for day trips, but peaceful enough for countryside unwinding and rural strolls in every direction: the Forest of Dean and the Brecon Beacons National Park are both within easy reach.

Pitches are in a wide open field with wide open countryside views and access to a drinking water tap every two pitches, chemical disposal nearby and grey water disposal.

If you're the sort that hopes for first-class amenities on a campsite too, you're sorted: the centrally heated loo and shower block, disabled facilities and recycling facilities on site are all immaculately maintained.

Burhope Farm welcomes well-behaved dogs.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Facilities/activities including fishing, sit-on-top kayaks are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Single-sex bookings of 5 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Great site with lovely views of the beautiful surrounding countryside. A very peaceful location. Pip the owner was very welcoming and super helpful! Showers and toilet always spotlessly clean, with plenty of hot water, with no push buttons or coins required! We loved staying at Burhope Farm and would highly recommend it.

Owners very friendly, lovely clean site, ideal for fishing my son in law loved catching very large fish. Fresh eggs were the best we ever had. Enjoyable few days had by all. Perfect place for keen fishermen never saw so many fish.

    Disliked:

Could do with more toilets and showers, maybe sell a few of the essentials campers need, would have loved something for the little one to do ie; swing/slide etc. We were aware of the fishing lake when we booked but didn't realise how near to the lake we were.

From the manager...

Thank-you for you comments,we are in the process of putting more loos in and i have now opened a small shop for campers and could do with feed back as to what people may like to see in there.

Directions

We are based in the Herefordshire countryside down some lanes which connect the A49, the A466 and the A465.

From the A465, turn off at Pontrilas Merchants between Abergavenny and Hereford and look for signs which say 'Canoe Centre and Burhope Farm Campsite'.

From the M50 join the A49, or if you are just on the A49, we are midway between Hereford and Ross-on-Wye.

From Ross-on-Wye, as you approach 'Harewood End', you will see a signpost for Orcop. Take this lake to its end. The end crosses a main road and then follow that lane for approx 3-4 miles. Follow the white signs for 'Canoe Centre and Campsite'.

From the Hereford end, follow the signs to Wormelow. Just outside of Wormelow is a right-hand turning signposted Orcop Hill. Follow this up and over the hill, then turn right at the crossroads at the foot of the hill. We are situated three-quarters of a mile up there on the right-hand side.

Local attractions

History and fishing, canoeing and cycling, pottering around market towns and clambering over old old castles are all handy from here in Herefordshire, Shropshire and over the border in Powys and east Wales.

The fishing in this area is a pull for anglers the land over, who come to try their luck at salmon, trout and coarse fishing on the River Wye. Pike of up to 30lb are landed from the Wye each year and it's said by those in the know to be one of the best rivers in Britain for bagging barbel.

If you don't fancy fishing, paddle a canoe or kayak along the river on a self-guided or guided trip available from one of the many watersports operators in the area.

More canoeing and fishing day trips – and mountain biking, hiking and horse riding – are at the nearby Forest of Dean: look out for wild boar and all manner of wild birds while you're there.

Both sides of the England/Wales border have more than their fair share of ancient castles to see – possibly because of all the ancient fighting between the two lands – and we respectfully suggest you can't come to these here parts without seeing at least one of them.

On the English side, thirteenth century Goodrich Castle, eleventh century Wigmore Castle and fifteenth century Hampton Court Castle and Garden (no, not the Henry VIII one) are the ones to view; on the Welsh, go south to super Chepstow Castle or west into the Brecon Beacons for castle ruins at Hay and Carreg Cennen.

Other day trips we respectfully suggest you can't come to these here parts without considering are meanders around the area's market towns: Hereford (and cathedral), Ross-on-Wye and Leominster in Herefordshire; Abergavenny just inside Wales, and to the north, Shrewsbury and Ludlow in Shropshire.

Must see

  • Goodrich Castle (8.7 miles)

  • Raglan Castle (11.7 miles)
