  • Hay-on-Wye 25 minutes' drive; a kilometre to Offa's Dyke Path
  • Private firepits; shared kitchen, pizza oven and games marquee
Fancy dipping into the outdoorsy lifestyle without having to pack up the whole house? Head along to Herefordshire site Valley Yurts, a family-friendly place five minutes’ drive from Gladestry, where guests can get straight into holiday mode with minimal fuss. Spread across a generous 10 acres, there’s plenty here to explore: it’s a wildlife haven, so keep eyes on the skies and the grass beneath feet when out for wanders, as there may be a red kite or buzzard gliding overhead, or some little critters crossing the path. There are resident chickens scratching about on site too, so eggy breakfasts are sorted (when the hens are feeling generous), and the yurts have cooking pots, griddles and private firepits for creating alfresco meals. Hit a rainy day? Head into the fully equipped communal kitchen or (with a little advance notice) opt for homemade pizza ingredients and book the woodfired pizza oven instead. Each of the hand-crafted yurts is kitted out with swish bedding, a wood-burning stove and solar-powered lighting, plus a central see-through crown for stargazing from your comfy bed. A bathroom block is a short stroll away for toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area. There is also a games marquee with table tennis, a cosy sofa and wood-burning stove.

Local attractions

Fresh-air walks are easily had here – the 177-mile Offa’s Dyke Path is a kilometre from the site. Prefer to roam with company, or combine your outdoor time with a bit of sport? There’s pony trekking and golfing 20 minutes' drive away. If you’d rather take to the water, there are several places nearby to hire canoes and kayaks to paddle on the River Wye. Animal fans are catered for at Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (20 minutes' drive), while those fond of the written word should head for Hay-on-Wye (25 minutes) – so famed for its second-hand bookstores (there are more than 20 of them) that it’s home to an annual literature festival. Wet your whistle at Dunkertons Cider Company (25 minutes) – if you’re thirsty for more, you’ll be pleased to hear that it’s part of the Herefordshire Cider Route, a circular driving route that takes in pitstops at several of the county's producers. Brecon Beacons National Park is about 40 minutes away – to get a glimpse of some spectacular scenery, take a packed lunch and make your way around the five-mile Four Falls Trail, which includes a waterfall you can walk behind for added wow factor.
