The Black Hill, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park

General

  • Riverside inn on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Nine miles from Hay-on-Wye
  • Dozens of walks starting straight from the site

A riverside inn, at the bottom of the Black Mountains, and flanked by the Brecon Beacons National Park: you might reckon there's a topping amount of hiking and biking around Herefordshire site Bridge Inn Camping Site. You'd be entirely correct – and as it's based at a pub, tipples and vittles after a hearty hike/bike ride will be a tiptop option too.

And if you don't want to hike or bike? First of all, pfffft, as this is a smashing countryside setting for both, but if your tastes do tend towards the more placid while on hol, the tome-heavy town of Hay-on-Wye is a mere nine miles away for picking up many (many) volumes; and for sightseeing, cathedral city Hereford is around 15 miles from the pub.

The tipples and vittles at the Bridge Inn have been lauded by many traveller types, so if you're a carnivore, do tuck into their well-regarded juicy steaks… The team's pretty knowledgeable about what's on offer hikewise around the area too: check out the dozens of local walks in the pub folder to plot where you'll be off to next.

Facilities on site include toilets and showers as well as a washing-up area.

We had a lovely weekend parked next to the river. There was a hardstand area which was great as the ground was a little wet to say the least.
The pub made our visit to be honest. They were so welcoming from the moment we arrived and the food was absolutely delicious. The best gnocchi we have ever had. They were great with our two large (and a little damp) dogs and the service was so friendly.
The toilet and shower area was also nice and clean.

The Bridge Inn is situated in an unspoilt part of Herefordshire. The food was worthy of 5 stars for quality and value for money. A proper pub with great staff

If somebody could spend half a day just tidying up outside the campsite it would set a better impression upon arrival

Beautiful setting with lovely gardens with a couple of Yurts and it's own pizza oven outside. . The food is amazing in a country style pub. Unfortunately we had a medical issue while staying and the staff were on the ball straight away and couldn't do enough for us. Would 100% recommend a stay here.

Lovely quiet location, wonderful food at the pub. Table booking required as always busy. Hot showers and regular cleaning of all facilities. No mobile signal, very limited wi-fi at the pub, but enjoyed the ‘get away from it all’ that this created, be prepared bring a book and a pack of cards. Had all kinds of weather but really enjoyed our stay.

Rural location, not many other campers, liked idea of it being next to pub

    Disliked:

The very smelly washing up and shower area, which we think was caused by the septic tank. The showers and toilet were all clean enough.
The washing up area is uncovered, so you are unprotected from the elements, and just a stone sink, so nowhere to put your clean dishes.

Site is large, but on a hill, so you can only camp at the bottom (watch where you pitch as you could be across the river opposite septic tank), or the top, where there is a slight incline.

Onsite bar. Good following of COVID distancing and sanitising etc.

    Disliked:

Any shops and other bars were a very long walk away or a car ride for quite some way. Very remote. No signal to look at location/maps and plan your day. Only one shower for ladies and one for gents. No hairdryer or plug and tiny hand basin not a full size sink. Only one sink for water/washing up.

Local attractions

Walks, walks and yet more English and Welsh walks…. dozens to pick from start straight from the pub, like the handsome route to Hay-on-Wye nine miles away, to have a wander around the bookshops before tottering back with to base with a rucksack full of tomes. The Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park, both edging the site, also have enough hikes of all lengths to keep you out of mischief for weeks.

Abergavenny, the Monmouthshire town promoted as one of the 'gateway to Wales', is ten miles from Bridge Inn Camping Site and has many more hiking options as the Marches Way, Beacons Way and Usk Valley Walk all pass through it (if these just aren't enough walking for you, the 177-mile Offa's Dyke Path is nearby).

Abergavenny dates back to Roman times and has many old buildings and ruins to see; for more ancientness, county capital Hereford is 15 miles from the pub and has a fine eleventh cathedral, home to the splendidly eccentric medieval depiction of the world in the Mappa Mundi.
