General

  • Riverside inn on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Nine miles from Hay-on-Wye
  • Dozens of walks starting straight from the site

A riverside inn, at the bottom of the Black Mountains, and flanked by the Brecon Beacons National Park: you might reckon there's a topping amount of hiking and biking around Herefordshire site Bridge Inn Camping Site. You'd be entirely correct – and as it's based at a pub, tipples and vittles after a hearty hike/bike ride will be a tiptop option too.

And if you don't want to hike or bike? First of all, pfffft, as this is a smashing countryside setting for both, but if your tastes do tend towards the more placid while on hol, the tome-heavy town of Hay-on-Wye is a mere nine miles away for picking up many (many) volumes; and for sightseeing, cathedral city Hereford is around 15 miles from the pub.

The tipples and vittles at the Bridge Inn have been lauded by many traveller types, so if you're a carnivore, do tuck into their well-regarded juicy steaks… The team's pretty knowledgeable about what's on offer hikewise around the area too: check out the dozens of local walks in the pub folder to plot where you'll be off to next.

Facilities on site include toilets and showers as well as a washing-up area; there's a playground for small sorts, and heaps of green open space is all around.

Pitch was fab for us, next to facilities as requested. Only gripe....no toilet paper in the ladies. The pub was excellent in terms of being dog friendly and the food was excellent. We actually booked two nights, but only stayed one due to meeting family at the bus fest in Malvern. We would definitely stop off again.

Potential great site when they sort the basics out 28/08/2017

The location, the views, the staff.
Great for touring Brecon Beacons, Wye Valley and Herefordshire.
Enjoyed our stay except for the basics expected listed below
I would recommend to a friend but warn them of below first.

    Disliked:

    Please can you consider :
Providing more toilets, the temporary loos are not fit for purpose.
Cut the grass in the tent field or ask paying campers to bring a mower with them!
Vehicles were struggling to get up the hill.
One shower for each gender not good.
Any chance of putting some water standpipes in the tent field? Walking from reception with a water container thro grass that has not been cut since the spring then up a steep hill not recommended.
Maybe some bins in the tent field to help with recycling or just to get rid of rubbish, couldn't find bins on the reception side used skip at the back of pub!

Quiet village pub location with basic facilities 21/08/2017

I was looking for somewhere quiet for an overnight stay and Bridge Inn Campsite was ideal for this. Only a few miles off the main roads, in a peaceful village location. The popular pub & restaurant has plenty of seating for diners; I recommend reserving a table and at least your main meal selection in advance. My meal at dinner was excellent and good value. The small bar has a wide selection of independent ciders and ales, with a good choice of wines.
The (male) small washroom facility is basic but was heated (an excellent feature!), with good electric shower. Outside there is a wash-up basin with hot & cold water. These facilities are a short walk from the field over a style - bring a torch.
The campsite field was very quiet as its away from the pub's car park. Early morning brought the sound from a cockerel and some moo-ing cattle - very rural.
I look forward to returning when I want another quiet weekend.

    Disliked:

The hill down the field to the level ground area for pitches could be tricky after wet weather depending on your vehicle (I was on an adventure-style motorcycle).
Single shower/washroom for each male and female; not a problem if you are up early like me.
There is no Vodafone coverage anywhere at the site, although you can obtain signal at the church just 150 metres away.
Wi-Fi only worked inside the pub and some of the outside seating which was a nuisance (for me) as I didn't have Vodafone signal.

Local attractions

Walks, walks and yet more English and Welsh walks…. dozens to pick from start straight from the pub, like the handsome route to Hay-on-Wye nine miles away, to have a wander around the bookshops before tottering back with to base with a rucksack full of tomes. The Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park, both edging the site, also have enough hikes of all lengths to keep you out of mischief for weeks.

Abergavenny, the Monmouthshire town promoted as one of the 'gateway to Wales', is ten miles from Bridge Inn Camping Site and has many more hiking options as the Marches Way, Beacons Way and Usk Valley Walk all pass through it (if these just aren't enough walking for you, the 177-mile Offa's Dyke Path is nearby).

Abergavenny dates back to Roman times and has many old buildings and ruins to see; for more ancientness, county capital Hereford is 15 miles from the pub and has a fine eleventh cathedral, home to the splendidly eccentric medieval depiction of the world in the Mappa Mundi.
