‘A tiny site with a big view’ was how a guidebook once described secluded Penlan Caravan Park, a cosy farm site seven miles from book town Hay-on-Wye in Herefordshire. As it straddles the English/Welsh border (Wales is only 500 metres away), the views in all directions speak volumes: the Brecon Beacons to the west, the Malvern Hills to the east and the Cotswolds to the south.

We probably don’t need to add that the farm is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty...and Penlan is pretty scenic on site too: it’s National Trust land with a seventeenth century farmhouse, and has two restored ponds with lots of local wildlife around to spot including red kites and woodpeckers – about the only noise you’ll hear when on site.

Owners Peter and Margaret assure guests of a warm welcome and a peaceful stress-free stay; there are just a handful of (sizeable) pitches available, and the heated shower and loo block is immaculately maintained and comes with free hot water. There’s even an area at the farm for guests to pick their own strawberries and raspberries, perfect to mix with sheep's milk ice cream from the Shepherds Ice Cream Parlour in Hay… For more substantial treats, several good eateries and drinkeries are close to hand: ask Peter and Margaret for their tips and they’ll be happy to help.
