General

  • Pub site three miles from Hay-on-Wye and bordering the Black Mountains
  • Canoe and kayak hire: launch onto the Wye straight from the site
  • Home-cooked food, local ciders, real ales and country wines

A riverside site with a pub and a splendid mountain backdrop, Hollybush Camping is within easy reach of the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park for (among many other things) heaps of walking and cycling routes, mountain biking trails, historic castles, sprawling cave networks and abandoned mines.

For over 10 years now, New Zealand-born owner Barbara has been developing a relaxed, friendly and sustainable site that focuses on giving guests a back to nature stay among a peaceful forest setting.

You can hire bikes at the park (helmet and hi-viz vest included), and canoes and kayaks are available to rent for trips along the River Wye.

There’s a shop on site where you can pick up everyday essentials, hot and cold snacks, alcohol and information about the local area, as well as a bar where you can pick up a pint before sitting down to crack out a few tunes on the piano.

Traditional Nepali and Thai cuisine is served at the site’s restaurant, Yak-Y-Da, which is open for lunch and dinner and also provides a takeaway service; meanwhile at the neighbouring Hollybush Inn, real ales, local ciders, country wines and locally sourced meat and fish dishes are on the menu; vegetarian, vegan and gluten free diets are also well catered to, and the pub often plays host to live bands at the weekends.

Hollybush has a policy of recycling as much waste as possible, so please sort your own recycling and leave any wood you might find on the forest floor for the use of woodland animals – however, firewood is available to buy at reception for campfires and barbecues (permitted anywhere except the lawn areas and the Field Margin area).

Dogs are welcome at Hollybush, but for the safety of kids and wildlife you’re politely requested to keep them on a lead at all times.

Me and my partner loved our weekend here, our puppy also ! The atmosphere was very nice with friendly people. The food was delicious. We can't wait to go again. If u want proper camping in the woods with a fire and privacy but also a pub with great food at walking distance this is where to go.

We've been there just for a weekend and was so pretty place. We camp in the woods in a lovely place where we did our own fireplace, table and bench close to the river side, like a say, was so lovely even the people mange that place, smiling faces and so kind.

    Disliked:

The worst part of that weekend was about toilets, showers and bar, they offer you that kind of services, but look too old and even didn't work, toilet was block and the floor was like a lake. the bar was impossible have a coffee cos no-one there or told us back in half hour.
We payed accommodation campsite services, but they were like wild camping.

The food and drink was amazing and very reasonably priced. The food did take about an hour to come but it was well worth the wait. All the food was freshly made in the inns kitchen, dinner and breakfast was amazing!

The staff working at the campsite were very nice, and helpful and always wanted to say hello and help out. The tent pitches were beautiful in the woods and by the river (especially by the river). Me and my brother loved the stay as it was very different to any place I'd stayed before.

It is also nice to see peacocks and chickens just wandering around the campsite. One peacock almost got in my tent.

    Disliked:

The state of the caravan section (which I didn't stay in) looks awful compared to the rest of the site. The caravans windows are smashed and some are being taken over by ivy and other trees.

The inn was very quiet more often or not is was empty, it would've been nice to see some more use like from passing trade.

When eating our food in the pub the workers dogs were allowed to walk around us. When food came the dog later under the table by us which wasn't the best when eating food.

This place is lovely. Seriously it's a beautiful nature, river, forest... it's perfect. I have got my tent with kids and we enjoyed almost everything.

    Disliked:

The site (I noticed that) have a handy man (maintenance) and looks like the man doesn't do his job properly. It's really beautiful place and needs to be looked after a bit more to make it even more beautiful. For a tent it is a perfect place but I am not sure about caravans (I just wouldn't go there on caravan)

I have to say it was the worst kept campsite I have ever seen. My husband and I are not particularly precious and were looking for wildish camping.

We drove down into the camping area and we saw teepee' black with what I could only suspect was mould. An area that looked like a trailer park from deliverence.

We had driven past the reception as we had not realised it was there because someone had taken a cone away from the camping area, so luckily we had not paid before we saw the 'camping area'.
We came back up, I asked if he could show us where we would be camping and the guy who was one of the owners said they usually kept people in the 'holding area' before the cone. He asked us to pay and sign then he'd show us.

We decided to leave and forfeit the deposit. We found an amazing campsite nearby.

We went for breakfast and apparently the site is renowned for being bad and heard stories of other poor campers experiences.

I would not recommend staying here at all.

Local attractions

Hire a canoe or a kayak for a trip down the River Wye to Hay-on-Wye, three miles away, and if your arms can handle it you can continue another five miles on to Whitney-on-Wye.

Plenty of fun outdoorsy options are within very easy reach, at the outdoor adventure company a couple of miles from the site: take your pick from orienteering, gorge walking, caving and rock climbing to clay pigeon shooting, archery and paintballing, all of which take place in and around the spectacular setting of the River Wye and the nearby hills.

There are heaps of fab towpaths, lanes and hillside tracks you can explore on two wheels around Brecon Beacons National Park, as well as a small loop that comes off the National Cycle Network’s National Route 42 and runs through nearby Hay-on-Wye; from there you can take a leisurely ride down to Llanthony Priory, which lies at the foot of the Black Mountains, and stop off for sustenance at the eatery next door.

Other popular things to do in the area include mountain walks along Offa's Dyke Path and the section of the Wye Valley Walk that runs between Hay-on-Wye and Builth Wells; if you're into birdwatching and animals there's a brill bird hide on the shores of Langorse Lake (10 miles) and a Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre in Kington (16 miles).
