General

  • In the grounds of a nineteenth century country house
  • Static caravan accommodation in a woodland setting
  • Club complex with licensed bar; fishing lake; forest trails

A Hereford holiday spot with a difference is what awaits at near Bromyard, as it's been set up in the grounds of Saltmarshe Castle, a former country house dating back to 1895. (The castle has been no more since 1955, but part of the outer walls, turrets, outbuildings and stables still remain: have a hol here to imagine you're some sort of swashbuckling adventurer.)

Saltmarshe is in a peaceful woodland setting two and a half miles from the market town of Bromyard, on 67 acres of elevated and gently sloping south-facing land. Accommodation is in static caravans, many of which have spectacular views over the surrounding countryside.

Facilities include a club complex with licensed lounge bar, evening entertainment and a games room; a fully-stocked shop and a bar and restaurant. If you're more of an outdoorsy sort, a fishing lake and a recreation field are also on site, along with trails into the forest for early morning woodland walks.

Several farms, many selling locally grown fresh produce and ingredients, are in the area, along with garden centres, family restaurants with homemade food and gift shops selling arts and crafts.

Road layout could be little confusing, especially with the work that was going on (I know the work couldn't be helped - if it needs doing, it needs doing).

    A lovely friendly welcome .
A spacious , clean and modern caravan with HD tv, DVD player and a warm shower.
A shop selling lovely ice creams .
A site with a bit of history- real castle ruins and turrets - our caravan was right under a castle turret.
This is a well kept and quiet site.
Lovely cooked food at the site restaurant - Caroline and Terry who run the restaurant and bar are wonderfully nice people, and the food is terrific and reasonably priced.
steaks, carvery , curry night, and fish n chips.
Friendly grounds staff - they really helped us when we had a bit of car trouble on the last day.

    Disliked:

    Shop opening times are limited
the entertainment room/ bar/ games room is a bit behind the times and in need of a bit of a modernization.
kids play area is small and quite a distance away from the caravans - its also located by the main access road into to the site - so we couldnt just let the kids walk upto it on their own.

It was ok but could be managed better 08/08/2017

The caravan was brand new and clean, spacious and had all we needed. The part of the site we were on was nice enough, I liked the historic buildings mixed in with the caravans. The play area was fun for our young children and they liked to visit the farm animals onsite.

    Disliked:

The fishing lake advertised was not stocked and we were advised not to bother fishing on it as something falling off the trees had poisoned all the fish. We went to the club house on site with our kids, literally stayed 2 minutes! Like something from the 1980s and we didn't feel happy to stay for even one drink....Talking of the clubhouse, we were looking forward to a short and relaxing weekend break away, but having the clubhouse pumping music until nearly 2am not only ruined our chances of relaxing but kept my kids awake too! Having the music so loud and lots of drunk people arguing, banging and shouting by our van didn't make me feel at home at all! Although the kids play area was enjoyed by our kids, having the rubbish bin area right by it could have been better thought through.

A large archive, a library and an exhibition room are open three days a week in the centre run by the knowledgeable sorts at Bromyard & District Local History Society.

Wildlife watching and walks are at the nearby Knapp and Papermill Nature Reserve and among the 123 woodland acres of Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum, while more of the same plus mountain bike trails, horse riding and a Go Ape are north of Kidderminster at the Wyre Forest.
