West End Farm Campsite: Lovely flowers near the pitches

General

  • Small family-run site on an organic cattle farm
  • Adjacent to the River Severn and close to the Severn Way
  • Community-owned village pub within walking distance

Set in a perry pear orchard on an organic cattle farm: that sounds almost poetic. As are the views from the spectacularly scenic little place of West End Farm Campsite, set in the horseshoe bend of the River Severn on the edge of the peaceful Gloucestershire village of Arlingham, and adjacent to the river with easy access to the footpaths of the Severn Way.

A rather smashing pub is within easy walking distance too: the Red Lion freehouse (owned by the village, hurrah) with tiptop locally sourced food, real ale and regular events like quiz nights and folk nights – all just the ticket after a peaceful pedal or serene stroll along the river paths or region's quiet flat roads…?

West End Farm has a toilet block and chemical disposal. Both barbecues and campfires are allowed on site.

Amazing Wildlife around the area and very good pub in walking distance, showers nice but only 2 of them so unless you get to them early you will have to queue, ground nice and flat and not windy because plenty of tree's and bushes around, seen a Goshawk flying over the local pub and Bee Orchids on a walk along the River Severn.

    Disliked:

Very noisy if your tent is near the communal fire pit at night because lots of people and children plus loud music which went on till late even when the guys mother came down and asked him to turn it down and then his wife or girlfriend came down and asked him to turn it down but i think maybe he was drunk so he never took any notice of them, not the campsite owners fault, there is a willow screen to hide them a bit but having it so close to our tent which was the only pitch left when we arrived so we had no choice but to put our tent there, there is also a Rookery in the trees on site and Rooks our extremely noisy so I'm really tired now and could do with Monday off of work, maybe a sign up saying some rules next to fire pit, maybe it would work but im not sure, it depends on what sort of people you have on site. By the way i am a birder and i do like rooks its not there fault.

Nice small site with a good location to explore. The pub in the village is good and had a good selection of real ales. Look on their website for local walks. Tom the farmer kept the facilities clean and well stocked!

Countryside walks, Severn way and proximity to the river Severn, the village of Arlingham is pretty with an interesting old church and village pub.

    Disliked:

The pitch we had booked was already taken when we arrived, a little more organisation required from the owners required, that said this did not spoil our stay.
There was a large group staying on site and they also had lots of day visitors, this gave the site the appearance of a car park and detracted from what would of been a more tranquil stay.

Lovely level site, toilets and showers very nice and kept clean, never saw anyone from the site but was well maintained. Not far from the canal which we thought was lovely. Plenty of footpaths to walk the dog.

    Disliked:

Being right next to the farm yard it could be a bit noisy with tractors, and a bit of a whiff from the silage...but hey ho I’m a country boy and I did expect country noises and smells, but didn’t stop me from wanting to go back.
Oh by the way the red lion pub up the road is VERY expensive.

One of my favourite camp sites, especially in quieter times10/06/2021

Easy going, quiet camp site. Very friendly campers and a relaxed atmosphere. Great facilities, campers keeping them clean and tidy too (though I stayed after the weekend so it was very quiet). Lovely hot showers.
My second visit to West End Farm and I'll definitely be back. A really good camping field which has been improved since last visit. They've listened to the feedback and made clearer signage and pitches.
There's a plethora of wildlife around the farm. It was so lovely to see the new calves in the fields with their Mums and Dad too, all docile and giddy with grass. A very different spectacle from the jumpy heifers a couple of miles away.
The resident crows had perky fledglings and the dawn chorus (before the crows wake up) is one of the hugest, most spectacular sounds.
The Arlingham peninsula is a very special place, slow and mellow pace, lovely natives and a timeless feel that draws you back there.

    Disliked:

The working farm is a busy hive of activity. Don't expect quiet in this respect - life goes on around the holiday makers with machinery, and a good thing too. I didn't dislike this, just a heads up for others.

Local attractions

West End Farm Campsite's local village is Arlingham, also in the River Severn's horseshoe bend and just off Junction 13 of the M5. The area around the village is fab walking and cycling land, of public footpaths, riverside ambles and flat peaceful roads – all set among first-class mid-Wales scenery. (Don't know where to start? Ask at the Red Lion for details of their hare, salmon, cattle and skylark wanders.)

A couple of miles from the farm is the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, running between Sharpness and the old docks of Gloucester. It's a pleasant place to while away a few meandering hours, particularly around Patch Bridge, close to the Wildfowl Reserve at Slimbridge which has the world's biggest collection of captive wildfowl.

Other local options are Berkeley and the Edward Jenner Museum, where the clever chap first figured out vaccination, and Berkeley Castle, where poor old Edward 2 met his grisly end.

Gloucester Cathedral is nine miles from the site; a little further afield are the Norman castle of Goodrich and the Tudor National Trust-managed house of Newark Park.

Must see

  • WWT Slimbridge Wetlands Centre (3.6 miles)
  • Berkeley Castle (7.2 miles)
  • Gloucester Waterways Museum (8.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Westbury Court Garden (2.3 miles)
  • Woodchester Park (8.5 miles)
