  • Rural and peaceful Peak District farm with animals including llamas
  • A five-minute drive to cycling on the Monsal Trail and 15 to Bakewell
  • Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth all within 20 minutes
Who needs to organise a hol all the way over in South America when you can linger beside the llamas at Five Acres Farm Campsite in Derbyshire? This park full of furry, friendly animals may not be within spitting distance of treks to Macchu Picchu, but it does have Peak District paths for hikes and cycle rides on the Monsal Trail starting from a five-minute drive away. The views are also nothing short of lush: the site is surrounded by wide open fields, and walks can be had without needing to get in the car towards the nearest settlement of Wardlow and up to Hay Cop (20 minutes on foot) for a look over the local landscape. If you’d rather dig into dessert than dawdle, the tarts and puddings of countrywide renown are at Bakewell, the only market town in the Peak District and a 15-minute drive from the site. Not too stuffed to think about stocking up on supplies after sampling the wares? Food stores are here too and other urban areas worth a wander for chocolate-box houses and cutesy craft shops include Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth, all within 20 minutes. Plenty other activities can be had in these towns too: Tideswell’s got the impressive St John the Baptist Church to have a gander at; Castleton’s known for its caverns where the famed Blue John stone is mined, and Bamford has three different dams to trek around. Chatsworth, meanwhile, is home to swanky stately mansion Chatsworth House – yep, that one mentioned in Pride and Prejudice and regularly voted Britain's top country house.

Liked: Great facilities always clean and tidy. Not too bust but for Easter Bank Holiday with unpredictable weather forecast there was still around 15 pitches. It seemed half the field was roped off so those pitches were squeezed in a bit but it was still nice enough. The field was very wet and muddy and cars could not go onto the field but the gravel entry and unloading space meant it was still fine to unpack the car and carry everything to the pitch.

Disliked: Noisy group of 4 teenage boys. This disrupted an otherwise pleasant stay when they persisted on making nose well after the quiet time cut of of 10pm. After having to shout at this group they did eventually shut up and allow us and our children to sleep. This is not the venue's fault obviously but when we look for sites we look for family friendly places that don't allow single sex groups and this was not applied in this case which is the responsibility of the site. This site claims the below but did not enforce this in reality. Groups welcome D. of E. welcome Family friendly Motorcycle friendly No Single-sex groups welcome No Student groups welcome

Liked: Lovely and quiet campsite! The facilities were good and very clean and the staff are really helpful. There’s a cafe and a pub within walking distance and plenty more options within 10’ drive. We really enjoyed our stay.

Liked: We had a wonderful time at Five Acres. They’ve got drinking water, a place to wash the pots, clean toilets & showers. It was busy but didn’t feel like everyone was in your face. As soon as someone started blasting out their music, it was dealt with very quickly. The owners are nice and do stay on top of things. Would visit again 👍

Local attractions

If guests do decide to give pedal pushing on the 8.5-mile and traffic-free Monsal Trail a go, they can use it to reach Bakewell, stopping at Monsal Head on their merry way for views of the River Wye and the Headstone Viaduct. For leisurely walks with typically stunning Peak District views, try Mam Tor or the Ladybower Reservoir (both around 20 minutes’ drive away); hardier hikers can take on an expedition to Kinder Scout, 40 minutes' drive away, to scale the national park’s highest point. Or, if you’d rather do your sightseeing underground, boat trips through Speedwell Cavern are 20 minutes away...
