The Bull i Thorn: Close to Bakewell, Buxton, Chatsworth House and Dovedale

General

  • Family-friendly site close to top Peak District attractions
  • A 20-minute drive from Buxton, Chatsworth House and Dovedale
  • On-site café; directly opposite the Tissington Trail

Off to Derbyshire for trips to Buxton, Bakewell and beyond? The Bull i Thorn is located just off the A515, making it a doddle to zip from one end of the Peaks to the other and be back in time for tea.

This peaceful park is set deep in the Peak District and comes with the sweeping views to prove it. The friendly site managers are keen to point out that muddy boots are welcome at this outdoorsy spot – handy indeed given that the car-free Tissington Trail is opposite the site.

After days packed with outdoor explores, you'll likely appreciate The Bull i Thorn's hot showers (a separate shower room is available for families travelling with young kids). There are also three water points and a covered washing-up area for self-catering sorts; if you'd rather someone else did the catering, head over to the café to pick from a tempting menu of breakfasts, lunches and homemade cakes (made, where possible, with seasonal and local produce).

Three pubs are within walking distance of The Bull I Thorn, with the nearest less than a mile away. The site is also a few minutes' stroll from Tagg Lane Dairy, a family-run gelateria that uses raw milk straight from their pampered Jersey herd.

It was the best campsite we have been too. Excellent facilities, cleaned regularly. Pitch was a decent size. Chris the campsite manager was great, always available and super friendly. Dogs are welcomed, campfires allowed and they even have WiFi!
There is a little playing field not far from the tents that the kids enjoyed playing on. I felt really safe letting them play.
Days out included Tissington trail, Buxton, bakewell, Thor’s cave (park at Wetton 30 min walk) it was a fab 3 nights. We’ve booked again in a few weeks.
Thank you for making it a family trip to remember.

Beautiful scenery, great size electric pitches, lovely on site cafe, Chris greeted us on arrival and was present most days on site and was very approachable. Washing up facilities and toilets were accessible and rarely full. Amazing day trips mostly less than 30 minutes drive. we did Buxton, bakewell, Eyam, Thorpe cloud and dovedale, three shires, monsal viaduct and a little of the tissington trail. We had a brilliant time, visited the duke of York pub and Royal Oak for evening meals, both within walking distance. There’s a great ice cream shop on the next road along from the campsite 👍 we will certainly return to this campsite again!

The facilities were clean and modern. The pitches are mostly level, of a good size to fit on our tent, a Kampa Hayling 6, and one of the few sites to have fire breaks clearly marked and adhered to. The Olde Oak pub does amazing food and has plenty of seating indoor and out, and Tagg Lane dairy also does light meals, sells meat as well as their incredible gelato. Both are accessible by walking across a couple of fields. Chris the site manager is friendly and does his job well. Within a few minutes drive you can be in Buxton or Parsley Hay to hire bikes and explore the Tissington or High Peak Trails. Can't recommend this place highly enough and we will definitely be back

Local attractions

This countrified site is close to beauty spots like Dovedale (20 minutes' drive), where you can stroll along the water's edge and picnic by the far-farmed stepping stones. For a more adventurous (and hillier) trek on foot, pick up the nearby Limestone Way in Monyash (five minutes).

Looking for cycle hire? Head to Parsley Hay (five minutes) to hire bikes (including accessible models) and tandems. This is where the High Peak and Tissington trails meet (both run along flat former railway lines, so there's little chance you'll run out of puff).

Chatsworth House (20 minutes) has grand gardens and elegant interiors to admire (there's also a guinea pig village that's likely to revive any tiddlers suffering from museum fatigue). Buxton (15 minutes) is a spa town of similarly posh repute and is full of boutique shops, ornate terraces and cultural sites (it also plays host to the Buxton Festival throughout the month of July). It's also home to two popular golf courses (the Cavendish Golf Club for hot shots and Peak Practice Golf for newbies).

Must see

  • Haddon Hall (6.2 miles)
  • Chatsworth (8.1 miles)
  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (11.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Winster Market House (7.9 miles)
  • Lyme Park (14.9 miles)
