General

  • Coarse fishery, camping and glamping in the National Forest
  • A short drive from Donington Park
  • Less than a mile from Calke Abbey

Yes, there's fishing available at this site. Quite a bit of it, in fact: one elated angler staying at Springwood Fisheries bagged over a hundred specimens in a tiddling two days...

Not an avid angler? There's a fair bit to do anyway around this friendly Derbyshire site, as it's on the edge of the National Forest and is a cracking base for a decent bagful of local attractions: Calke Abbey, for example, is less than a mile away and the racing circuit of Donington Park within about ten to 15 minutes' drive.

All guests have access to the site facilities of loos and showers, a water station, chemical waste and refuse disposal. A café on site serves snacks and hot and cold drinks; Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Melbourne village are close by for other supplies.

The angling at Springwood Fisheries is of the coarse variety, on two lakes brimming with common, ghost and mirror carp, crucians, ide, chub, tench, roach, rudd, perch and barbel, and is charged at £4 for a day ticket.

Finally, please note that while older children are welcome at Springwood Fisheries, the nature and layout of the site means there's limited space to play: ball games and bikes are therefore not allowed.

Thank you to Iain Jen & Brian for a great seven night stay. Hardstanding Pitch was very roomy and right next to a lake. Fishing was spot on and the fish are very well looked after. This is down to Iain with his stricked catch and release policy and size of line and hook. The site is well looked after and maintained fishermen's / women's toilets are very good as is the shower for the hardstanding MH'S caravan's. Melbourne a small nice town with a post office spar Sainsbury's green grocers butchers bakers fish & chip shop Chinese take away Plenty of pubs that do food.

    Disliked:

Fishermen's toilets could do with hot water plumed in. Washing up area could do with a light.
But by the way Iain & Jen are putting in the effort it will not be long before they transform this site from a great site to a outstanding one.

Road noise can be a bit loud but you soon forget all about it

I had a very pleasant relaxing two nights stay in a pod with my little dog. Much more pleasant than I expected because I don't even like fishing! The owner was very pleasant and nice to chat with. The great weather helped too, I left feeling I wanted to sell my house and buy a touring caravan. Lovely well kept tranquil site with lots of wildlife which helps to bring you back down to earth.

    Disliked:

At times, mad noisy drivers speeding down the road nearby. (not onsite)
No Wi-Fi. (But didn't miss it much anyway)

Really nice place. Owners were exceptionally nice and friendly. We took our little dog who loved it too. My fiancee is an avid fisherman and thought it was fantastic. A very well stocked and looked after fishery.

He caught plenty of fish. We will defiantley return.

    Disliked:

Nothing, only thing I would suggest is that for the luxury pods to be dog friendly with owner discretion.

I totally understand that some dogs it wouldn't be advisable to allow in the luxury pod. However some would be fine. I would like to stay longer in a luxury pod as you have the benefit of a shower and kitchen facilities. Hopefully this could be considered in the future.

Local attractions

Base yourself at Springwood Fisheries for an easy angling break or a browse around the attractions and sights of the New Forest and Derbyshire – we hear a bit more fishing is available around these parts too (hint: pick up a Forestry Commission fishing permit and look for Hatchet Pond and Little Hatchet).

If you're on hol here with older kids, try the play areas, discovery zones and amphitheatre at Conkers Adventure Centre in the New Forest at Swindlicoate or the Megazone or Tenpin at nearby Derby. And all ages should be raring to get to the Grand Prix Collection at Donington Park, the biggest collection of Grand Prix cars in the world.

Nearby Staunton Harold Reservoir, containing Dimmingsdale Nature Reserve, is a carefully maintained habitat for plant and bird life; it also has a visitors' centre, sailing club and adventure playground.
