General

  • Coarse fishery, camping and glamping in the National Forest
  • A short drive from Donington Park
  • Less than a mile from Calke Abbey

Yes, there's fishing available at this site. Quite a bit of it, in fact: one elated angler staying at Springwood Fisheries bagged over a hundred specimens in a tiddling two days...

Not an avid angler? There's a fair bit to do anyway around this friendly Derbyshire site, as it's on the edge of the National Forest and is a cracking base for a decent bagful of local attractions: Calke Abbey, for example, is less than a mile away and the racing circuit of Donington Park within about ten to 15 minutes' drive.

All guests have access to the site facilities of loos and showers, a water station, chemical waste and refuse disposal. A café on site serves snacks and hot and cold drinks; Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Melbourne village are close by for other supplies.

The angling at Springwood Fisheries is of the coarse variety, on two lakes brimming with common, ghost and mirror carp, crucians, ide, chub, tench, roach, rudd, perch and barbel, and is charged at £4 for a day ticket.

Finally, please note that while older children are welcome at Springwood Fisheries, the nature and layout of the site means there's limited space to play: ball games and bikes are therefore not allowed.

Perfect place to stay for us as we were doing a course with Woodlands Survival Crafts next door to the campsite. Campsite is a very nice, clean site. Lots of friendly people. As one of the criticisms previously noted, there are match days held here. Which can mean it is best to wait until after the rush to head over for breakfast. We waited until 9, and had a pleasant time chatting and watching everyone set up their gear whilst we waited for our full English. Delicious breakfast - good value for money at £6 including drink.

The planes going overhead didn't bother us at all. Some nice wildlife in the woods next to the site (private land).

    Disliked:

Only downside to the site is there are no footpaths, a car is needed. Unless you don't mind a road stomp whilst cars are whizzing past.

Friendly staff where nothing was too much trouble. Clean facilities and very dog friendly. Cafe on site, although we didn't use it due to the fact that the Mrs plans to feed the world and shops accordingly. I do hear though that it does a cracking breakfast. The planes did not bother us at all, but we have grown up with aircraft noise.

    Disliked:

The track to the pitch could be made a little wider especially when there are lots of anglers on site. Was a little worried that I would catch a car / van on the way up. No big deal though.

Beautiful place run by a friendly and helpful owner who was diligent about fixes/cleaning.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately, this idyllic campsite is under the East midlands flight path. They didn't fly at night and never disturbed our sleep, but made a fair noise every 30-40mins or so.

From the manager...

Thanks for your comments

sorry the planes disturbed you ,there are multiple runways and it just so happens they were taking off from the one that leads them over the fishery that weekend

Many thanks

Iain

Local attractions

Base yourself at Springwood Fisheries for an easy angling break or a browse around the attractions and sights of the New Forest and Derbyshire – we hear a bit more fishing is available around these parts too (hint: pick up a Forestry Commission fishing permit and look for Hatchet Pond and Little Hatchet).

If you're on hol here with older kids, try the play areas, discovery zones and amphitheatre at Conkers Adventure Centre in the New Forest at Swindlicoate or the Megazone or Tenpin at nearby Derby. And all ages should be raring to get to the Grand Prix Collection at Donington Park, the biggest collection of Grand Prix cars in the world.

Nearby Staunton Harold Reservoir, containing Dimmingsdale Nature Reserve, is a carefully maintained habitat for plant and bird life; it also has a visitors' centre, sailing club and adventure playground.

Must see

  • Calke Abbey (0.9 miles)
  • Castle Donington Museum (4.7 miles)
  • Conkers Discovery Centre (6.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Calke Abbey (1.7 miles)
