  • Coarse fishery, camping and glamping in the National Forest
  • A short drive from Donington Park
  • Less than a mile from Calke Abbey
Yes, there's fishing available at this site. Quite a bit of it, in fact: one elated angler staying at Springwood Fisheries bagged over a hundred specimens in a tiddling two days... Not an avid angler? There's a fair bit to do anyway around this friendly Derbyshire site, as it's on the edge of the National Forest and is a cracking base for a decent bagful of local attractions: Calke Abbey, for example, is less than a mile away and the racing circuit of Donington Park within about 10 to 15 minutes' drive. All guests have access to the site facilities of toilets and showers, a water station, chemical waste and refuse disposal. A café on site serves snacks and hot and cold drinks; Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Melbourne village are close by for other supplies. The angling at Springwood Fisheries is of the coarse variety, on two lakes brimming with common, ghost and mirror carp, crucians, ide, chub, tench, roach, rudd, perch and barbel, and is charged per day ticket. Finally, please note that while older children are welcome at Springwood Fisheries, the nature and layout of the site means there's limited space to play: ball games and bikes are therefore not allowed.

Local attractions

Base yourself at Springwood Fisheries for an easy angling break or a browse around the attractions and sights of the National Forest and Derbyshire – a bit more fishing is available around these parts too (hint: pick up a Forestry Commission fishing permit and look for Hatchet Pond and Little Hatchet). If you're on hol here with older kids, try the play areas, discovery zones and amphitheatre at Conkers Adventure Centre in the National Forest at Swindlicoate or the Megazone or Tenpin at nearby Derby. And all ages should be raring to get to the Grand Prix Collection at Donington Park, the biggest collection of Grand Prix cars in the world. Nearby Staunton Harold Reservoir, containing Dimmingsdale Nature Reserve, is a carefully maintained habitat for plant and bird life; it also has a visitors' centre, sailing club and adventure playground.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Immaculate facilities, friendly staff. Lovely landscaped fishing area. Close proximity to the town & nearby National Trust attractions

Disliked: The road noise was constant and very loud on the pitches down by the fishing lake. It was constant & horrendous. The noise from the planes was also awful as the site is directly under the EMA flightpath. If you're a light sleeper, this is not the site for you. Such a shame for us as we loved everything else about this beautiful site.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Small site with a focus on fishing. Pitches were spacious and the grass well maintained. The fishing was pleasant, well stocked and maintained. The site was basic but quiet, tidy and well maintained.

Disliked: The site is on a flight path for nearby East Midlands airport, with planes flying low during the night as well as daytime. There was also possibly a music festival nearby as loud music for a couple of nights until about 11.30. Would have liked for hot water to be available in the toilet facilities, and more than 1 shower in the camping field. The washing up point was outdoors, and not cleaned very well.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The peacefulness, the lake, the convenience for commuting each day to Donington for work/training, the fabulously warm showers and the very friendly resident labrador.

Disliked: Nothing, really!

Liked: Idyllic site, very picturesque. Very quiet site. Would return and stay again as handy for Donnington.

Disliked: Facilities were basic and served a purpose. Could do with a few more toilets or another shower.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Nice and peaceful looking, not too strict on the pitch limitations. Pleasant couple running the place. Nice and tidy, hot water, flushing toilets, nice shower. 10 mins at most from Donnington Park (great for us)

Disliked: Constantly has planes flying over as it is in the flight path for EM Airport. Could do with another shower or two. I can imagine that if the site was full, showering would become a chore. Perhaps increase the load rating on the electricity as it kept tripping our RCB whenever someone hooked up. Had a devil of a time washing the tree sap off the camper, might be worth trimming the trees back along the fenceline behind 10,11, etc.

Non-electric grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Excellent Campsite. The owner works very hard maintaining the site. The grounds, the toilets and even the free showers were immaculate during my stay. The fishing is fantastic. No downsides to this campsite. If you book it I guarantee you wont regret it.
