General

  • Immaculately-kept site family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers

Pigs, ponies and proximity to top Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills.

This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas clan for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from small people heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly hol by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from pitch.)

Kids will be enthusiastically entertained with the opps to pet and give treats to the Middlehills Farm pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings.

Facilities at Middlehills Farm are spotlessly kept and include a loo and shower block (showers are £1 for five minutes or 20p a minute), a small shop selling camping equipment and basic bits, a chemical waste point and a washing-up area.

The pitches take tents, tourers and motorhomes, and as you'd expect for a free-range and friendly farm, you can settle yourself down anywhere that tickles your fancy.

The shop only opened at random times, and you had to pay for the showers on a meter.

Pitches were good, facilities clean and enough of them, kid liked play park, shop good with nice rental of fire pits

    Disliked:

There was some noise from nearby, perhaps the quarry, did bother me too much, but perhaps owner should have a chat, strikes me as not quite normal operating practice

We had the most fabulous time at Middlehills farm. Our daughters are 4 & 2.5 years old. Their play area was really fab and the girls loved playing there. The site is kept to a very high standard. Toilet and showers were close by and very clean. They have a small shop etc. You can even hire firepits from the shop too!
I did read some previous reviews before coming and a few people had mentioned the noise from an near by quarry. We did hear the noise but it was a very low level and not at all a problem. So don’t be put off by that.
The views around the site were spectacular and we will be definitely going back.

Directions

From Junction 28 of the M1, take the A38, heading for Ripley, then turn onto the A610 heading to Ambergate (you can follow the signs to Gullivers Kingdom). Turn right onto the A6 to Cromford, turn left into Cromford, then right onto the A5012 for approximately 4 miles. You will arrive at a T-junction with the Hollybush pub on your right. Keep straight on for 400 yards and you will see a sign on your left for Middlehills Farm. Turn left over the cattle grid and up the drive. You have arrived.

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first three or four days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks.

The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so say we too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round.

Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too).

To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each.

The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but we'd quickly also recommend walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.

Must see

  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (3.6 miles)
  • Arkwright's Cromford Mills (3.9 miles)
  • Haddon Hall (5.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Winster Market House (1.9 miles)
  • Kedleston Hall (11.7 miles)
