General

  • Immaculately-kept site family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers

Pigs, ponies and proximity to top Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills.

This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas clan for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from small people heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly hol by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from pitch.)

Kids will be enthusiastically entertained with the opps to pet and give treats to the Middlehills Farm pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings.

Facilities at Middlehills Farm are spotlessly kept and include a loo and shower block (showers are £1 for five minutes or 20p a minute), a small shop selling camping equipment and basic bits, a chemical waste point and a washing-up area.

The pitches take tents, tourers and motorhomes, and as you'd expect for a free-range and friendly farm, you can settle yourself down anywhere that tickles your fancy.

    Beautiful, rural campsite
    kids play area

    quiet after 10.30pm
    fridge/freezer
    electrical sockets for hairdryer/straighteners
    plenty of toilets/showers

    Disliked:

We stayed over a busy bank holiday weekend and found the toilets/showers were not very clean. This was probably due to how busy the site was but during busy periods it may be worth cleaning more frequently and checking the facilities regularly.

Great location, clean facilities and friendly and helpful management. 29/08/2017

The site is clean and big enough to have space to camp but small enough not to have to walk far for the amenities. The park, which caters for small and older children, is opposite the toilets, shop and pot washing blocks. It would also be possible to camp next to the park or certainly within visibility of the park for children wanting a bit more independence whilst still under supervision from parents.

The site is in a good location to explore the dales, and the backdrop with farmers fields is lovely - the pictures don't do it justice.

Our dog had an accident whilst we were there. The managers offered to:
    - call the local vet
    - keep our belongings safe until we were able to collect them (we decided to take our dog to our local vet at home)

That was very practical and helpful - no red tape just assistance. We also had an issue with some anti social campers (you get that anywhere) which was also dealt with immediately and effectively.

Clean and accessible toilet blocks. Little touches like washing up bowls in the Pot wash area was also really helpful.

We would definitely stay here again.

    Disliked:

There is a small shop on site which is helpful and well equipped. However, I found the location was a good half hour from any supermarket and the traffic was horrendous. Depending on your needs / length of stay this might be worth considering.

It is made very clear that the showers are 20p a minute - so we went well prepared with change. Unfortunately, although very clean like the toilets, the showers are in need of an upgrade. Lukewarm and no power to them whatsoever it was really difficult to even rinse shampoo from my hair. It will be a 5* from me if this can be rectified for booking next year.

    Fantastic camp site.
Friendly staff, clean facilities, great park for kids to play and excellent amenities.

We encountered a large group of noisy neighbours on our first night who unfortunately didn't respect the rest of the families late at night. This was brought to the attention of the owners of middle hills and they couldn't have been more accommodating and understanding towards the situation; proving excellent customer service and didn't make us feel like we complained over nothing.

We cannot recommend the site enough and will be booking again for 2018.

Directions

From Junction 28 of the M1, take the A38, heading for Ripley, then turn onto the A610 heading to Ambergate (you can follow the signs to Gullivers Kingdom). Turn right onto the A6 to Cromford, turn left into Cromford, then right onto the A5012 for approximately 4 miles. You will arrive at a T-junction with the Hollybush pub on your right. Keep straight on for 400 yards and you will see a sign on your left for Middlehills Farm. Turn left over the cattle grid and up the drive. You have arrived.

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first three or four days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks.

The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so say we too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round.

Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too).

To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each.

The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but we'd quickly also recommend walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.
