General

  • Farmland and woodland site on the edge of the Peak District
  • Two miles from Buxton
  • Petting zoo open on site in high season

Pitching up among the trees on six acres of farmland and woodland on the edge of the Peak District and the Derbyshire Dales… all sounds pretty topping indeed.

Family-run Staden Grange looks over open fields with Peak District vies in all directions and is a two-mile potter or five-minute drive from elevated spa town Buxton as well as a piffling 10 to 11-mile drive from famed historical homes at Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall.

Kids will be stoked with the petting zoo at Staden, open in high season and run by the friendly folks at Archie’s Farm (on site but not connected with the site), where they can make friends with Archie the eponymous donkey and Miniature Mediterranean pal Dinky, Alice the alpaca, Buttons the pygmy goat, rabbits, ducks and guinea pigs.

Facilities on site include a heated amenities block with toilets and coin-operated showers.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Bookings must not be for more than 12 consecutive nights.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Group bookings of 8 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Please note that as the site is in a wooded area, it will be necessary to close the site in extreme weather conditions (wind speed in excess of 40mph). We will endeavour to give you as much notice as possible if this happens.

Please note that the showers are coin-operated, with £1 buying 6 minutes, or 20p for 1 minute.

Will definitely return in better weather 09/11/2017

Facilities were modern, clean, and site was really nice under trees, and open.
We had to leave early as weather was really bad, we lost our gazebo and awning, and will have to replace our tent. The owners had already suggested we leave early, but we were willing to see how the weekend went, and they were happy to re-fund us for the nights we did not stay. Will definitely go again, in better weather.

    Disliked:

Factory was a bit close and a lot of light at night.

The welcome was great the site wasnt too busy so we were able to fully relax. Overall the facilities were ok

    Disliked:

The kids play equipment was only really suitable for older children. Nothing for little ones.
The facilities were ok but the shower cubicles were small which is tricky when trying to cope with two children. No family facilities so was left just to me to sort our girls.

The area of Buxton is lovely and we enjoyed visiting the caves.

    Disliked:

The approach to the site is truly awful and off putting. On arriving just 10 minutes before 1.00 check-in for our tent pitch we were greeted without a smile or any kind of friendly greeting from the manager. He just told us we had caught him 'on the hop' due to our early arrival. We thought he was going to turn us away, but he somewhat begrudgingly booked us in. Perhaps we shouldn't have bothered because the site is unorganized, over flowing bins, very rowdy large group of people taking up the whole of one corner who proceeded to play loud music and kick a football about. Then we couldn't sleep because of the planes flying over every five mins. Needless to say we will avoid this campsite in future, mainly due to the unfriendly and 'off' welcome from the manager and being on the airport flight path. It's also pretty dull being under so many trees as you don't have any lovely sun on your tent.

Helpful staff, small and well-kept grounds, modern and clean toilets and facilities. Good proximity to Buxton and Peak District attractions.

Pitch markings somewhat unclear and in some cases close to one another. Mostly nice location marred by proximity to industrial estate. Often noisy due to young children and families.

Loved the location of this campsite, just outside of Buxton. The campsite itself felt like you were in a wood. You are allocated a pitch on site, my daughter loved that we were right next to the playpark so she could swing and climb to her hearts content, unfortunately for the adults is also meant that we constantly had a lot of shouting kids running around our tent!
Showers - there's a £1 charge for 6mins in the shower, there are only 2 female showers and in the morning, there is always a queue. likewise for the toilet's. On the upside they were always clean and toilet roll was provided.

I felt the owners have tried to provide as pleasant a stay as they could and they were always onsite if needed. The downside is that the site is located near an industrial estate and also what felt like a flight path also so even in the dead of night there was a constant hum of a factory. Nothing the owners can do about it but just something to be aware of. The upside is that you do get a fantastic view of the stars at night which are spectacular.

A pleasant campsite with good access to North Derbyshire, Chatsworth's house and the village of Buxton & Casleton with their various caves and Bakewell and its famous pudding. A lovely short breack and I would recommend.

    Disliked:

The location being so close to factory as there was a constant hum during the night.
Unsure why the owners charge £1 for the showers, seems pointless.

The camp site has a farm on site which is really fun, all the animals seem well looked after. Very friendly donkey. Good information about the animals too. It was free for an hour if you stayed in the campsite which we made the most of and appreciated.

Toilet block was clean, modern, warm and unique looking.

Nice onsite shop, very useful when we forgot our saucepan!

Friendly owner, very helpful and kind. Great free map at reception.

    Nice being amongst the trees.

    Disliked:

Not many toilets, only two female and two male. Same for showers. The shower was amazing on the first morning, powerful and warm. But sadly on the second morning was freezing. No hand soap for the majority of the stay. No loo roll at one point. Annoying very loud tap (broken?).

Didn't like the through road as people drove too fast through the campsite and late at night. Our pitch was right next to the road with no protection from the road eg fencing.

Sadly campsite was next to an industrial site and a chemical plant. Also could hear planes and the A515.

Tent was covered in tree sap, very sticky. The car was too.

Cafe only opened at 11am, so no breakfast :(

Directions

We are 2 miles from the centre of Buxton just off the A515 Buxton to Ashbourne Road.

Driving from Buxton, turn left onto Staden Lane (signposted) and then drive 200 yards over a small railway bridge and turn immediately right, following the signs for Staden Grange. Follow this unmade road between fields for about a quarter of a mile and you will find the campsite on the left-hand side.

Local attractions

A couple of miles’ stroll through the Derbyshire countryside will take Staden Grange guests to Buxton, the highest market town in England and named as one of the top three most attractive towns in the land in 2013.

Have a full day or a couple of afternoons here, finishing off with a ramble and a rest at the Pavilion Gardens, 23 acres of listed greenery strolled and lazed upon by visitors to Buxton since Victorian times. A miniature train, activity park, play area and toddlers’ area have been set up in the gardens for smaller visitors, and the Buxton tourist information centre is in the gardens for info on Buxton and the Peak District.

In town, snap pics of the Georgian architecture (Buxton has been described as the most complete Regency town in Britain) and wander along the shops of the old Cavendish Arcade set in Buxton’s original thermal baths before hanging around into the evening to catch a performance at Buxton Opera House or the Pavilion Arts Centre. The history of these and more are at the Buxton Museum and Art Gallery on Terrace Road, open Tuesday to Sunday with free admission.

Just outside Buxton, the limestone caverns and stone poached eggs of Poole’s Cavern are a big pull for visitors; you’ll see what is meant by stone poached eggs when you see them...

More caverns, caving, pot holing and various other stone-based adventures abound in the Peak District National Park a few minutes’ drive from Buxton, where additionally there are acres of rocks to scale for those who prefer their adventuring above ground.

Nearby at Castleton in the High Peak, four show caves open to visitors include Blue John’s Cavern, along with nearby Treak Cliff Cavern the only place in the country to find the semi-precious mineral Blue John (the cavern was also visited by the strange pair in the fab film Sightseers). Above ground, do the four mile circular walk from Castleton along to Speedwell Cavern or trek from Castleton to Hollins Cross, Mam Tor and Cavedale.

The Goyt, Manifold and Dovedale valleys are also nearby to access cycling, fishing, sailing and the Manifold Valley walking and cycling trail.

Dovedale, a National Nature Reserve and one of the most visited natural attractions in the country, has yet another cavern in Raynard’s Cave, which has artefacts displayed at Buxton Museum including Roman and Iron Age coins discovered in 2014.
