On arriving at Longnor Wood we were greeted by lady who gave us our plot number and we were directed there by a gentleman, he informed us of various things and the surrounding area. He was incorrect in saying there is only EE signal for mobile phones, couldn’t get a signal on EE but could on O2!.

There is only a WiFi signal right adjacent to the Reception but you had to pay if you were anywhere else on the campsite.

The weather was great on our first night, although we were on the second pitch and under the trees, all the campers were out enjoying the evening with BBQ’s etc, there was a party of 4 with a young baby which did baby things throughout the evening but we thought nothing of it.

The following day I invited my Sister & Niece along to the campsite with her 2 young children for some tea, because we had seen what happened the night before we thought it was okay as they were only visiting. WHAT A MISTAKE!!

They hadn’t walked 20 feet before this abrupt old man started shouting “You can’t bring children on here, this is Adults only and we are not insured” God knows who he was and what on earth it had to do with him. We said that there had been a baby the night before and he said “tell me where I will soon sort that” He was told “That was the night before and the family had left” If he hadn’t had his TV on so loud he might have heard them. He was asked to give us 20 minutes for the children to eat there chips and they would leave, he grudgingly agreed and when back to his caravan with a snarl.
As you can imagine by this time the whole campsite had fell silent because of his raised voice, they could hear every word he snarled, very embarrassing for all.

He must have rang someone off the park because within 3 minutes up came strutting another guy who didn’t introduce himself again but lent on our guy ropes and barked through the open door “ You can’t bring children on here, we not insured for them” scared the children to death and really riled us! Again after another, what I can only describe as a shouting match from him he agreed to the 20 minutes. The children were still eating their chips when he returned exactly 20 minutes later barking “you’ve had your 20 minutes” before he had even got to us, again, leaning on our guy ropes with his arms raised up.
Again the children were petrified and wanted to leave away from the “Gorilla” at the door.
I asked for his name which he said was “James” as he came around right into my face, chest out and said “ is the booking in your name” “yes” I said and we will be leaving this place tomorrow even though we had booked for 4 nights. Was he really going to hit me, a 60 year old?
He marched off like a strutting peacock laughing to himself.

Is this the way to treat people who book these sights? The campsite might be in the sticks but they need to wake up and live in this century!

Obviously we made a mistake but is this really the right way of going about it?
All either of these intimidating, rude bullies had to do is say “Can I have a quite word please” and take me to one side but no it was bull in a china shop attitude all the time.

No we won’t be going back after this embarrassing matter which was totally uncalled for and you won’t be surprised that we do not recommend at all!

From the manager...

I could go into all of the various ways this review is untruthful but would just like to briefly make the following points.

1. This person violated three of the booking terms and conditions that they agreed to with regards to visitors, they were brought on site after 5 O'clock, they did not sign them in at reception and they brought children on to an adult only site. All of which would have been perfectly reasonable grounds to terminate the booking.

2. There was no baby, that was said to have been here the night before, reported by any customer or member of staff.

3. The only threat of violence came from the gentleman that was covertly smuggled on to the site. Who’s first words to the manager (James) were “I’m going to f***ing punch him” in reference to ‘the old man’ Phil who is one of our assistant wardens. He is 65 by the way.

4. We have award winning customer service with great reviews from other customers. Please see for yourself.

We feel the many excellent reviews we get from customers who follow the terms and conditions, that they agreed to, speak for themselves.

Local attractions

Splendiferous stately homes nearby include Chatsworth House, which also has an animal farm park and woodland adventure playground, or Elizabethan Hardwick Hall, where you’ll find events as varied as yoga walking to den-making within the 2,500 acre grounds.

This part of the country is also stuffed with market towns to bumble around: riverfront Bakewell, where it would be rude not to sample the eponymous puddings; Ashbourne, home to over 200 listed buildings; Leek, where you can hop aboard a steam train alongside beautiful Rudyard Lake; Castleton, with a Norman castle and some impressive underground caverns; or Buxton, a splendid spa town with glorious gardens and its own opera house.

The Roaches, near Leek, are far more pleasant than they sound: a prime Peak District spot for walking, hiking and other outdoorsy stuff, with fab views of the surrounding countryside.
