Longfield Farm: Caravan and view of one of the pitches on the site

General

  • Small, friendly Peak District site close to several walking trails
  • A 10-minute drive to Buxton and Bakewell and 20 minutes to Chatsworth
  • Dog-friendly pitches; several pubs within a five-minute drive

For peaceful times in the Peak District National Park take a look at Longfield Farm, a small and friendly site surrounded by Derbyshire countryside. A 10-minute drive from the spa town of Buxton and the medieval town of Bakewell, the pitches here are well situated for all sorts of alfresco activities.

In the surrounding Peak District, guests can pull on their walking boots and get stuck into several good hikes along the likes of the Tissington Trail and the Monsal Trail, each within a 25-minute drive. Dogs should find plenty to sniff out on countryside walks too, and cyclists can make use of the area's many dirt paths. For other outdoor activities to get the heart racing, there's kayaking, windsurfing and fly fishing 30 minutes away at Carsington Water, including taster sessions for first-timers.

After all this, put your feet up at one of the local country pubs. Handily, there are several within a five-minute drive, including one with a large playground to let the kids blow off some steam while you nurse a well-deserved pint.

This is a simple site with basic facilities only, but you’ll have access to water points, three toilets and a shower. If you don’t fancy a bite to eat from one of the local pubs, you're welcome to light up your own barbecue instead. Both Buxton and Bakewell have a good selection of supermarkets, or you can head to one of several local farm shops for meat and extras to put on the grill.

Please note

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Peaceful, open space surrounded by farmland and animals. Good location for tourist attractions and walks. Lots of hot water and clean facilities.
Big pitches. Cold water tap per pitch. Good access to electricity.

    Disliked:

Dish washing facilities is a kitchen sink outdoors with no draining area, not a problem with it being outdoors but sink gets dirty so we washed up our collapsible bucket (placed in the sink). That meant we had nowhere but lids of the wheelie bins or ground to place washed/dried dishes. I'm sure a draining area wouldn't be too much to add.
Also no hot water access outdoors so had to get this from the toilet block, again logistics not ideal.

Only other thing to meant would be the shower, hot water and clean but not put together well so cubicle doors didn't fit together and covered cabin floor with water!

Field is open, no hedges for wind break so might be something to consider if in high sided vehicle or tent on windy days. But that does mean wonderful views of your surroundings.

This is really only very minor because our stay was lovely, but we like to be able to explore from campsites on foot and there were limited trails from the campsite that didn't require walking down the road.

Local attractions

If your walking boots are a camping essential, take them over to the Tissington Trail for a fine 13-mile route through the Derbyshire countryside. The route commences a 25-minute drive away in Ashbourne. For a shorter trail, the Monsal Trail is 15 minutes away – it's easier on the feet with a less demanding 8.5-mile route.

For adrenaline seekers, Carsington Water is half an hour’s drive away. Here, you can hire kayaking kit or try out windsurfing if you're feeling extra ambitious. If watersports aren't your strong suit, their taster sessions will help to ease you in to the relevant techniques. For other activities that will raise your heart rate, there’s an outdoor pool in Hathersage 25 minutes away and several indoor pools within a 25-minute drive.

Further afield, take a whirl on the rollercoasters at Alton Towers, a 40-minute drive away and with plenty to fill a full day. At Matlock Farm Park (30 minutes), a collection of cute animals should keep kids entertained; they can give horse riding a go too or gently feed the lambs if they're seeking some quieter time.
