  • Valley site a mile from the Peak District town of Buxton
  • Surrounded by woodland and with a gorge and viaduct at one end
  • Playground, games room, gas exchange and well-stocked shop

Traveller types - move Buxton to the top of your list... The Derbyshire spa town and gateway to the Peak District was shortlisted in 2013 as one of the top three most attractive places in the British Isles (Cork and Hastings were the other two; move them to the top of your list as well).

A mile from town and the closest campsite to Buxton is Lime Tree Holiday Park, in its own valley in a Special Landscaped Area, surrounded by farmland and with a wooded limestone gorge and old railway viaduct at one edge. (There are maps, brochures and sheets of information on attractions in the area at the Lime Tree reception or ask one of the helpful staff for advice on things to see and do.)

Facilities on site include an adventure playground; an indoor games room with pool table, kids’ corner and TV/DVDs; a well-stocked shop with local produce and an ice block freezing facility; gas cylinder exchange and a microwave for heating babies’ or toddlers’ food.

Among the amenities are toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a launderette with ironing facilities;

    Lime tree is a lovely campsite, the staff are very friendly and helpful, the shower block was very clean and always plenty of hot water for showers and washing up, we had quite a lot of rain on our stay and the pitch was well drained and didn't get muddy, would recommend.

    Everything! Oh wow, what a lovely welcome from the staff who remembered me from a couple of weeks previously when I had called in to pay. The facilities were super clean and it was great having an onsite shop too! The play park was suitable for my children of 6 and 8. The staff couldn't have been more helpful even if they tried, nothing was too much trouble for them! As a family that is quite new to camping it made our last camping trip of the summer one to remember. The pitches are lovely and we were able to get one that was fairly secluded too.

    Nice quiet site, not too many pitches, good play area for the kids, and a nice big field for football etc. Lovely open views, plus some more secluded pitches as well. Shop and games room available, although we didn't use them. Good location - very close to Buxton, but it felt a lot further into the countryside. Shower block was nice and clean. Lovely welcome from the owner.

    Disliked:

    There are no designated pitches, you can pitch anywhere. This wasn't necessarily a problem, but it might be an issue if you like your space and don't want it invaded when it's really busy. The site also has quite a lot of non-flat areas and most of the flat bits were taken when we arrived, so had to pitch on a slight slope, but it wasn't too bad.

Local attractions

There’s quite a bit to immerse yourself in at the spa and market town of Buxton, one of the most popular destinations in the Peak District.

Like Bath in the south, it was founded as a spa town by Romans and became popular in Georgian times for the supposed health-giving properties of its spa water. Fill up your water bottle at St Anne's Well in front of the Crescent then go on a Buxton tour to see its Georgian architecture and smart landscapes: the award-winning ornamental gardens at the Pavilion, complete with play areas, lake and miniature railway; the Devonshire Dome, the biggest unsupported dome in Britain; and the opulent Buxton Opera House, the highest in the country (as Buxton is England’s highest town, set in the Derbyshire hills at over 1,000ft).

For Buxton shopping, nightlife and restaurants, try the Quadrant, George Street and the Old Court House areas; there are several independent shops in Cavendish Arcade.

The Peak District as a whole is full of market towns stuffed with local produce and interesting attractions: go to Bakewell for the essential eponymous tart; Leek for Rudyard Lake and the steam train; Ashbourne for a couple of hundred listed buildings, and fellow spa town Matlock Bath. If you don’t mind travelling a bit further, Sheffield and Manchester can both be reached in about an hour to an hour and a quarter.

Also nearby is Castleton with Norman Peveril Castle and four show caves; if going underground is your thing, also check out the caves at Poole’s Cavern just outside Buxton. And there’s caving (and climbing) aplenty at the Peak District National Park, along stacks of outdoor pursuits like hot air ballooning, gliding, water sports and biking the Tissington and Manifold trails.

Too much? The Peak has quieter options too, from photography courses to birdwatching to browsing around the area’s many historical houses.
