General

  • Valley site a mile from the Peak District town of Buxton
  • Surrounded by woodland and with a gorge and viaduct at one end
  • Playground, games room, gas exchange and well-stocked shop

Traveller types - move Buxton to the top of your list... The Derbyshire spa town and gateway to the Peak District was shortlisted in 2013 as one of the top three most attractive places in the British Isles (Cork and Hastings were the other two; move them to the top of your list as well).

A mile from town and the closest campsite to Buxton is Lime Tree Holiday Park, in its own valley in a Special Landscaped Area, surrounded by farmland and with a wooded limestone gorge and old railway viaduct at one edge. (There are maps, brochures and sheets of information on attractions in the area at the Lime Tree reception or ask one of the helpful staff for advice on things to see and do.)

Facilities on site include an adventure playground; an indoor games room with pool table, kids’ corner and TV/DVDs; a well-stocked shop with local produce and an ice block freezing facility; gas cylinder exchange and a microwave for heating babies’ or toddlers’ food.

Among the amenities are toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a launderette with ironing facilities;

Location of site and surrounding scenery. Clean showers but there ... 04/09/2017

Location of site and surrounding scenery.
Clean showers but there were only 5 other tents on site
    Supermarket nearby

    Disliked:

Very noisy due to access road being used by many as a rat run to avoid Buxton. Additionally, a lot of noise from the Buxton - Bakewell main road.
Surprising amount of aircraft noise particularly in the early hours
Rather expensive for 3 people - non hook up
Reluctance to agree to late check-out despite very low occupancy (just wanted tent to dry)

Well run site, clean and tidy. Friendly staff.

    Disliked:

Tent pitches are on a hill so it makes difficult to sleep. Also long way to toilet block given u walk back up a steep hill to your tent. Kids could not use toilet without adult as the door lock was too high. Also did not allow us and our friends who we pitched next to us to have a gazebo up between tents.

From the manager...

The only time we do not permit gazebos is over the bank holiday weekends - This is due to the lack of space if everyone uses one, if customers book a gazebo for that weekend or ask whether they can use one we inform them of our rules before they arrive.
We have found this year, gazebos can be huge! Often, larger than the tent customers have brought with them - However, as previously said, we only do not allow them over Bank Holidays - We hope this did not spoil your enjoyment too much, we had a great weekend here at Lime Tree - great weather and lovely customers.

Really liked the setting and the onsite facilities, a laundry room, shop and small games room with WiFi internet access. The owners were very friendly and able to help with any queries. Shop sold anything you may have forgotten.the toilets and showers are very clean and enough so that you don't queue, a lovely park for children as well

    Disliked:

Not a dislike at all but just an observation the tent pitches are on a slight slope and a short walk to the toilets so just need to be prepared with small children .

Local attractions

There’s quite a bit to immerse yourself in at the spa and market town of Buxton, one of the most popular destinations in the Peak District.

Like Bath in the south, it was founded as a spa town by Romans and became popular in Georgian times for the supposed health-giving properties of its spa water. Fill up your water bottle at St Anne's Well in front of the Crescent then go on a Buxton tour to see its Georgian architecture and smart landscapes: the award-winning ornamental gardens at the Pavilion, complete with play areas, lake and miniature railway; the Devonshire Dome, the biggest unsupported dome in Britain; and the opulent Buxton Opera House, the highest in the country (as Buxton is England’s highest town, set in the Derbyshire hills at over 1,000ft).

For Buxton shopping, nightlife and restaurants, try the Quadrant, George Street and the Old Court House areas; there are several independent shops in Cavendish Arcade.

The Peak District as a whole is full of market towns stuffed with local produce and interesting attractions: go to Bakewell for the essential eponymous tart; Leek for Rudyard Lake and the steam train; Ashbourne for a couple of hundred listed buildings, and fellow spa town Matlock Bath. If you don’t mind travelling a bit further, Sheffield and Manchester can both be reached in about an hour to an hour and a quarter.

Also nearby is Castleton with Norman Peveril Castle and four show caves; if going underground is your thing, also check out the caves at Poole’s Cavern just outside Buxton. And there’s caving (and climbing) aplenty at the Peak District National Park, along stacks of outdoor pursuits like hot air ballooning, gliding, water sports and biking the Tissington and Manifold trails.

Too much? The Peak has quieter options too, from photography courses to birdwatching to browsing around the area’s many historical houses.
