  • Surrounded by woodland and with a gorge and viaduct at one end
  • Playground, games room, gas exchange and well-stocked shop

Travelling types, move Buxton to the top of your list. The Derbyshire spa town and gateway to the Peak District was shortlisted in 2013 as one of the top three most attractive places in the British Isles (Cork and Hastings were the other two; move them to the top of your list as well).

A mile from town and the closest campsite to Buxton is Lime Tree Holiday Park, in its own valley in a Special Landscaped Area, surrounded by farmland and with a wooded limestone gorge and old railway viaduct at one edge. (Maps, brochures and sheets of information on local attractions are at the Lime Tree reception, or ask one of the helpful staff for advice on things to see and do.)

Facilities on site include an adventure playground; an indoor games room with pool table, kids’ corner and TV/DVDs; a well-stocked shop with local produce and an ice block freezing facility; gas cylinder exchange and a microwave for heating babies’ or toddlers’ food.

Among the amenities are toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a launderette with ironing facilities;

Well kept site - very clean toilets and showers, litter bins always clean and tidy, lovely planted areas and rugged rocky backdrop. Great farm shop on site. Friendly staff who take pride in the site and their service. Ice pack exchange a great feature. Great dog walking straight from the camping field. Nice playpark for children. Lovely views.

    Disliked:

Busy, fast road just outside the caravan area, which is the walking route into Buxton. Only three showers (each) meant queues at busy times. Elevated position means it gets very windy at times. Most tent pitches are sloped. Road/path to tent pitches is steep uphill and quite mossy which makes it slippery underfoot. Small site shop doesn't sell any fresh food (no bread or fresh milk) - no opening hours displayed.

Beautiful views in a quiet tranquil setting. We camped at the top of the field on the right-hand side, overlooking some stunning countryside with a beautiful old and a style railway bridge. Camped at this spot we were able to enjoy sunshine from early morning till sunset in the evening. However on the other side (left-hand side of the field) you can enjoy similar sunshine as well as distant views of the hills. We like this side simply because of the railway bridge feature.

We are told the site can accommodate 75 tents, but they never book more than 50. This gives you some idea about the harmony and space the units of the campsite are trying to develop. From my point of view they have succeeded, and whilst there were many tents with families and pets, everyone is so respectful. For a busy bank holiday weekend there was tranquillity from the campers and their pet dogs.

The site itself has a spotless toilet facility and unlimited hot showers. In fact they also have an individual shower room with a handbasin and mirror for extra privacy. This is an unusual setup, but warmly appreciated.

We had an unfortunate incident in which a fellow camper decided to plant two tents virtually on top of us. In almost 40 years of camping I have never come across anything like this. I imagine the fee paid by the two tents and their multiple occupants to the campsite was greater than ours, but decency and professional integrity prevailed and they asked for the smaller tent to be moved at a distance which preserved our privacy and space which we were enjoying until their arrival. This is a further example of the lengths management goes to produce a genuinely relaxed and spacious environment. We wish to make a special mention and thank you to Tina Harris for managing this difficult and sensitive situation so professionally.

The site has a small play area for children close to the shower blocks and facilities. They also have a deep freeze for ice blocks as well as a small shop for daily produce.

Right from the start we had a great welcome, which felt it was from the heart. The welcome pack included local information as well as information on the campsite. With the campsite sitting right on the doorstep of the Peak District itself, we had less than 15 minutes drive into the stunning peaks of Castleton. The welcome pack also included discount vouchers for local businesse and restaurants.

    Disliked:

The only thing of note is that the large field (without the hook up) is on a slope. This is not a problem for us as we are able to sleep appropriately and on waking enjoy the amazing views.

Great site - stunning location. I pitched at the top of the camp field and had 360 degree views. The toilet blocks were immaculate and the staff and wardens tremendously friendly.

    Disliked:

The main camp field is on a large slope which made for some interesting sleeping positions. The walk to the toilet block was a bit of a hike. The site could do with a pool of some kind, particularly as it was one of the most expensive solo two-man tent stays I have ever experienced.

Local attractions

There’s quite a bit to immerse yourself in at the spa and market town of Buxton, one of the most popular destinations in the Peak District.

Like Bath in the south, Buxton was founded as a spa town by Romans and became popular in Georgian times for the supposed health-giving properties of its spa water. Fill up your water bottle at St Anne's Well in front of the Crescent then go on a Buxton tour to see its Georgian architecture and smart landscapes: the award-winning ornamental gardens at the Pavilion, complete with play areas, lake and miniature railway; the Devonshire Dome, the biggest unsupported dome in Britain; and the opulent Buxton Opera House, the highest in the country (as Buxton is England’s highest town, set in the Derbyshire hills at over 1,000 feet).

For Buxton shopping, nightlife and restaurants, try the Quadrant, George Street and the Old Court House areas; several independent shops are in Cavendish Arcade.

The Peak District as a whole is full of market towns stuffed with local produce and interesting attractions: go to Bakewell for the essential eponymous tart; Leek for Rudyard Lake and the steam train; Ashbourne for a couple of hundred listed buildings, and fellow spa town Matlock Bath. If you don’t mind travelling a bit further, Sheffield and Manchester can both be reached in about an hour to an hour and a quarter.

Also nearby is Castleton with Norman Peveril Castle and four show caves; if going underground is your thing, also check out the caves at Poole’s Cavern just outside Buxton. And there’s caving (and climbing) aplenty at the Peak District National Park, along stacks of outdoor pursuits like hot air ballooning, gliding, water sports and biking the Tissington and Manifold trails.

Too much? The Peak has quieter options too, from photography courses to birdwatching to browsing around the area’s many historical houses.
