Greystones Nawab Camping and Touring: Pitches with trees for shade

General

  • Small site in the Peak District National Park
  • A short drive from the famed spa town of Buxton
  • A 40-minute drive from Alton Towers; donkey sanctuary next door

Peaceful times in the Peak District National Park are pretty much a given at scenic and small Greystones Nawab Camping and Touring, with its first-rate views over green countryside. But add in proximity (an easy seven miles) to the famed Peak District spa town of Buxton and it's fairly safe to say that holidays of a highly relaxed nature are very much on the cards…

Those of a more active disposition (alongside spa days, this is also recommended around these parts) have hiking, walking, cycling, pony trekking, climbing and paragliding all close by, as well as a Go Ape centre within a mile for woodland antics. For family days, the caves of Poole’s Cavern are just outside Buxton, the Peak Wildlife Park is half an hour away and Alton Towers is within 40 minutes. A donkey sanctuary is next door to the site.

Newly opened in 2018, Greystones Nawab is a grassy and peaceful site in a wildlife haven, and is motorcycle, family and dog friendly. It has showers, three toilets, a washing-up area and charging facilities. Wifi is available near the main house.

Please note that the site has rare-breed chickens.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

A charge of £1.00 applies for the use of the shower.

Group bookings of 8 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Please bring hand sanitiser with you if possible as there is a limited supply onsite.

Toilet and shower facilities consist of portacabins, with the washing-up area just outside them.

This is what I would call a lovely little site that's still evolving, its a cracking location and within distance of some wonderful walks and scenery.
The owner is a lovely chap and couldn't do enough for us, very accommodating and continually working on site making improvements for the campsite. (This guy doesn't stop!)
The site itself isn't huge but in my opinion its just the right size where everyone can enjoy a nice space of their own and also socialise with other campers. On that note, the other campers (of all ages) were so friendly.
Next door to the site there's a Donkey Sanctuary which was ace for the kids, and some beautiful meadows for the kids to play safely too.
Across one of the meadows (a 10min walk) is the Tag lane dairy ice-cream shop where you can get ice-cream to die for, freshly made on site. Also nearby there's Bakewell, Buxton spa town, and the beautiful scenic Lathkill dale. Lots to do!

I wont say I 'disliked', these are just observations.
Could do with a few more loos and maybe a few signs where amenities are to be found.

The view. The field was flat . Quiet

    Disliked:

Poor facilities. Seriously poor toilets. 2 of and only one shower. Had to queue and field only a third full . No bins. Confusion over our pitch on arrival. Wet weather so entrance to field was a quagmire. Useless washing up area no hot water. Minimal effort by owner to offer a decent camping experience

    Location. Level pitch

    Disliked:

Poor toilet and shower facilities located in a portcabin, appeared grubby and uninviting. £1 to use the shower on top of £25 per night fee. No hand sanitiser on site.
Field entrance becane extremely muddy and made it difficult to exit the site with a caravan on tow, could do with hard core laying at entrance.
It was stated that WiFi was available, but it wasn't. This is perhaps a new site and a "work in progress", but appeared to have had the minimum provided to call itself a Camping and caravan site.

Local attractions

Buxton (10 to 15 minutes' drive away) has plenty to do for all ages, including tours around its Georgian architecture and ambles around the award-winning Pavilion gardens. Shopping and nightlife are most plentiful around George Street, the Quadrant and Cavendish Arcade; for kids of a small size, a soft play centre is in town.

Kids of all sizes should like going underground at Buxton's Poole's Cavern, a limestone cave surrounded by Buxton Country Park. Take a guided tour among the huge chambers of the caves to hear tales of the Stone Age people, Roman soldiers and medieval outlaws who used them; after that and above ground, there are woodland trails to wander, rabbits and woodpeckers to spot and – possibly of more interest to fatigued grownups – a café serving drinks and hot snacks.

Another spa town – again possibly of more interest to fatigued grownups – is at Matlock Bath, 20 minutes' drive away.

Must see

  • Haddon Hall (5.8 miles)
  • Chatsworth (7.8 miles)
  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (11.3 miles)

National Trust

  • Winster Market House (7.5 miles)
  • The Old Manor (14.8 miles)
