General

  • Peaceful family-friendly site with views over Lathkill Dale
  • A 10- minute drive from the tea rooms of Bakewell
  • Easy access to walking routes through the Peak District National Park

Take a peek at the fab Peak District views from the pitches at Mandale Campsite. Whichever spot you choose as your territory, the outlook over the national park is painted in various shades of rural green – all fields, woods and perhaps the occasional farm. Just beyond the site’s fences lie the gorgeous Lathkill Dale, a fave spot for for hikers and birdwatchers.

Peace, quiet and open air are in ample supply here – with heaps of space in the fields there’s no need to be living cheek by jowl with your neighbours. Site rules have been devised to maintain the restful vibe for all, with guests requested to refrain from loud music and campfires. Passing school groups of Duke of Edinburgh’s expeditions are welcomed and housed in a separate field to avoid any friction between teenage antics and chilled family soirées.

This is a particularly tempting location for sweet-toothed visitors, with the nearest town being Bakewell, home to not one but two famed desserts. Debate continues among local and visitors as to the relative merits of Bakewell tart and Bakewell pudding, so clearly the only solution is for the individual to conduct their own scientific test by sampling both. The town’s tearooms can provide you with excellent examples of both, and there are plenty of pubs and restaurants to cater for your savoury requirements too.

Feeding options closer to home include the country pubs in Over Haddon and Monyash, each less than a 10-minute drive away (there’s a super little play area in Monyash too, if you’ve got energetic kids in tow). If the desire to create fire grabs you, you’re also welcome to light up a disposable barbie to grill a few bangers.

Amenities on site include two toilet blocks and two shower blocks, with four coin-operated showers in each. The nearby washroom has a freezer for ice packs and a table football that serves as a handy incentive for kids to get their washing-up task finished.

Please note

A charge of £1.00 applies for the use of shower.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Fantastic views, walking distance (mile or two along a pretty lane with great views) to the lovely Lathkill Dale and 2 pubs. Beautiful part of the world. Very friendly and helpful hosts, laid back feel, very quiet. Large field, quite flat, plenty of room. Very nice showers, I thought the £1 for 5 minutes was reasonable. Everything very clean. Would definitely stay again.

    Disliked:

Not really a dislike - I had great weather but being on a hill top I imagine it could be a bit blowy sometimes, so if you were in a tent you might need to bang the tent pegs in firmly. Having said that, the field had a good dry stone wall round it and a belt of trees on one side, so there is some shelter.

Really friendly staff, toilets were in excellent condition. Wonderful views, nice atmosphere. Hot drinks available on request, leaflets etc of local food available and taxis etc. More than everything you need. Hard standing area for cars/campers which is very useful in muddy wet weather!

    Disliked:

Quite difficult to find (in the middle of nowhere) but that isn’t their fault at all just something to be weary of!

Local attractions

Eating as much Bakewell pudding as you like is perfectly acceptable because of the abundance of hiking trails on which to burn off the calories (that’s your excuse and you’re sticking to it). The limestone valley of Lathkill Dale, just outside the site, is a very fine place for a walk and has some excellent birdwatching to be done along the way.

Further walks await all over the Peak District National Park for all abilities. The relatively gentle paths of Mam Tor and the Ladybower Reservoir are about 40 minutes’ drive away; keen hikers in search of a challenge should aim for Kinder Scout, 50 minutes’ drive away, to climb up to the highest point in the park. A popular option for families (on foot or by bike) is the Monsal Trail, which starts a 20-minute drive away and meanders through nature reserves and underground tunnels to finish near Bakewell (for a restorative pudding perchance?).

For a spot of history (or to shelter on a damp day), head to Chatsworth, a splendid estate on the banks of the Derwent river half an hour away. There’s plenty to keep you busy all day here – take a tour of the house, spot the sculptures as you wander round the gardens, get lost in the maze and learn to milk cows at the farmyard. Haddon Hall, a fortified medieval manor house 20 minutes away, is also well worth a look.

A fun place for a family day out is Gulliver’s World, 40 minutes away in Matlock Bath. The theme park, specially designed with kids aged from two to 13 in mind, has heaps of rides, play areas, games and themed attractions including Dinosaur Kingdom and cowboy-tastic Western World.

Must see

  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (8.9 miles)
