  • Award-winning park a short drive from Ashbourne and the Peak District
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers; 35 minutes from Chatsworth Estate
  • Dog-friendly site with coarse fishing lake and provisions to buy
Callow Top Holiday Park has received lots of awards, and it’s easy to see why: it's got that excellent mix of heaps of things to do nearby and peaceful space to relax in of an evening. Location first: this fab park is five minutes' drive from Ashbourne, at the southern gateway to the Peak District National Park; guests can pedal off on the Tissington Trail straight from the grounds or easily get out for lots of lovely walks. Peak District days aplenty are around too, for ambling around old country piles, getting busy in the countryside with the many active options nearby, or taking the kids to one of the local theme parks (might they note that Alton Towers is just 20 minutes' drive away)? And with few distractions on site, that means plenty of scope simply to chill out and take in your surroundings – perhaps spending a bit of time at the coarse fishing lake or prepping a grand alfresco feast (provisions including bread, milk and eggs are available to order and barbecues are allowed, but takeaway food and drinks from Arnold’s Café Bar are available, along with deliveries from local takeaways if you're after something you don't have to cook for yourself). For 2021, the swimming pool and paddling pool will remain closed. The pub and arcade will also remain closed, and there will be no entertainment scheduled on site. However, the children's play area, games field and bird hide will all remain open.

Local attractions

As it's set in prime Derbyshire territory, there are fab walks all around Callow Top; for pedallers, the Tissington Trail provides a (mainly flat) route out of the grounds right into the Peak District. The local region has loads to all ages, from the stately Chatsworth House and historic spa towns of Buxton and Matlock, to the chills, spills and thrills of Alton Towers. Visitors of an excitable disposition can keep their adrenaline boosted with watersports, paintballing, zipwiring, high wire assault courses, quad biking and laser tag all available nearby. Take younger kids on a trip to Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park or a ride in a cable car followed by some cave exploring at the Heights of Abraham. Other options include walking among macaque monkeys in the Monkey Forest at the Trentham Estate, near Stoke on Trent, where they can also make like an ape on the aerial walkways: all that should buy you some privileges at Trentham’s shopping village or lakeside café, surely…?
