General

  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area

If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne.

For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail; it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers; it’s been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious famous visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie.

Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from the town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera.

Also perfectly, Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside.

Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Customer: access to the swimming pool is not included in the rate and is charged £2.50 per adult and £1.50 per child per session.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Group bookings of 4 or more people under 25 are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Beautifully kept site. Very friendly staff. Excellent location.

    Disliked:

There seemed to be very few shower facilities given the number of pitches, however, we were there over a quiet period so it was of little consequence

Lovely well kept site, very friendly staff and my daughter loved the pool.
The Harrier Hawks were an extremely pleasant surprise with a clearly dedicated handler who was happy to chat, very educational.
Loads of dog bins which is excellent but unusual for some sites.
Didn't use the Rally Room but did take a look and it was a lovely space, especially for those in tents in the wet weather.
Well placed to tour the area.
    Good local pub.

    Disliked:

We paid for an awning but due to the weather we didn't set it up (not unexpected for October) however we did notice that the pitch we had was not even large enough to put up the awning and have the car to the right as directed.
This would be a concern if we come to visit in drier times and if we found the same again it would have an impact on the holiday.

    Disliked:

This would have been our first trip to Ashbourne Heights (and our 2nd ever caravan holiday) I had booked a couple of weeks beforehand for 2 caravan pitches and as it was for half term only grass pitches were still available. However as much as I understand nobody can control the weather to have our holiday cancelled due to boggy ground at 5.25pm the day before we were due to arrive was very last minute and harsh. Leaving it so late left us in a nightmare situation of having to either let the kids down (3 of which are foster children) or struggle to find somewhere else very last minute at a busy school holiday time. it would have been nice to have been told earlier in the day when we could have had a chance of alternatives being still open to phone.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review.
We are sorry to hear that we had to cancel your booking. With our many of our pitches being grass, they can become boggy very quickly and easily. The constant rain that we have seen in the past couple of weeks, took off many of our fields and the rain in the past couple of days meant that the remaining pitches that we did have we could no longer use.
We always contact our guests as soon as possible.

We do hope to see you soon.

Arrived slightly early. No problem. Given a welcome pack with lots of info.
Bigger site than expected but well laid out and plenty to do.
Surprisingly busy for this time of year, good mix of tents, motorhomes, static caravans and lodges.
Not too many toilets or showers but never needed to wait and were cleaned regularly and of a good standard.
Great location with lots of walks and places to visit.
Great holiday atmosphere, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Good dog walk on site. Good play area for the children and indoor pool. A little shop for all your essentials.
Would we come back again? Definitely. Enjoyed it so much that we have placed a deposit on a static caravan.

    Disliked:

Disliked the weather, but that didn’t stop us enjoying our break.
Would like to see a few seats scattered around the site, same goes for litter bins and doggy bins.
That said, we had a great time. Thank you.

    Harris hawk

    Disliked:

Incredibly overpriced (£21 at the end of October!)
    Dated and insufficient bathroom facilities
Being penned in with a tent pitched on either side of us, despite there being sufficient space for us to spread around the site. We go camping to be in beautiful surroundings, so try to avoid being right on top of others where possible.
The site hosted a function on the night we stayed. The music did stop promptly at 23:00, but a notification that the event was taking place when we were booking would be more considerate.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback.
We're glad that you enjoyed our Harris Hawks and we are sorry to hear that your stay did not fully meet your expectations.
The price £21 is due to you coming at Half Term which is counted as high season.
We notified all our guests that due to the weather we had that many of our pitches were offline due to the pitches being unusable.
All of our guests also received information in their pack regarding the end of season party that was being hosted, as well as many posters around the Park, including toilets and the outside of our communal 'Rally Room'.

We hope to see you again.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn the grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park.

If you have younger sorts along, a less adrenaline-based but not less quiet time is available at the ‘Young Fun’ part of the park, which had CBeebies Land new for 2014 among various other totworthy fun. Alton Towers’s separate water park also has areas for the very small, along with hundreds of water features, lifeguard training and – bliss – a treatment room for the big people.

You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you then take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, a family theme park for ages two to 13 and designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). If the offspring are still swinging about with excessive energy, Go Ape! at Buxton Country Park might let off suitable steam, or you could try knocking them out at award-winning Conkers in the National Forest.

Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak.

Cyclists can pedal off along the Tissington and Manifold Trails, both mostly flat, and for walkers there are hundreds of miles’ worth of paths to pick from, such as the 46-mile Limestone Way, the 55-mile Derwent Valley Heritage Way or parts of the Pennine Way.

More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at Matlock’s Mining Museum.

Also recommended is Haddon Hall, a medieval manor house at Bakewell, used in reels of film sets from Jane Eyre (thrice) to The Princess Bride, and described as ‘the most perfect house to survive from the middle ages’.

Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as Cavalier horsemanship displays (the seventeenth century sort), exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, a new outdoor play area, indoor riding school and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
