General

  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area

If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne.

For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail; it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers; it’s been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious famous visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie.

Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from the town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera.

Also perfectly, Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside.

Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Customer: access to the swimming pool is not included in the rate and is charged £2.50 per adult and £1.50 per child per session.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Group bookings of 4 or more people under 25 are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Average site, but not one to use twice in my opinion 14/08/2017

Site was in a beautiful location with access to lots of lovely things to do. Play park was good for the kids.

    Disliked:

    * Very muddy on arrival and the staff issued us with a pitch in the mud, they were very polite and helpful when we asked to be moved but we were a little confused as to why they gave us a pitch on a muddy slope when we were staying a week but the good pitches became free the following day when all of the weekend parties left. We were still on a sloped pitch but not a muddy one!

    * Vary rowdy group of people near us that were up (and noisy) until 1am, not the campsites fault but annoying all the same.

The walks from the site are great local pubs and being on the tissinton trail a bonus

    Disliked:

Very disappointed we asked for hard standing with awning only to find out they don't do that type of pitch (they have asked you to remove the option from your site) would not have booked if we had have known-we where put on a grass pitch before we could pitch up one of the resident van owners had parked there car on our pitch took us 20 mins to get it moved only to find it was like a swamp we asked for another pitch witch was a bit better but all in all not happy for the price of the site £35,00 per night we have had better on farm fields would not go back

From the manager...

Jon, thank you for you review.
We're sorry to hear that you could not have a hard standing pitch and also the facility to put an awning up. This is something that we hope can be addressed in the near future.
Bridge Leisure took over Ashbourne Heights less than a year ago and we are constantly improving and looking for ways to improve.

Once again, thank you for your feedback.

Great in a caravan not for us in a tent. Nice staff and surroundings. 13/08/2017

The area was amazing and close to the Tissington trail and the staff were very friendly. Liked the dog shower too. That came in very handy!! Nice park for the kids to play.

    Disliked:

The toilets were few and far between and dirty 90% of the time. The field we were in was crowded our first weekend with no open space for the kids to play with the park a long way from our pitch and people still parting at 1am, there was no attempt at noise control from staff, and while I appreciate these people are on holiday too there is usually a general rule that noise levels should be low after 11pm not for our weeks stay unfortunately.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn the grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park.

If you have younger sorts along, a less adrenaline-based but not less quiet time is available at the ‘Young Fun’ part of the park, which had CBeebies Land new for 2014 among various other totworthy fun. Alton Towers’s separate water park also has areas for the very small, along with hundreds of water features, lifeguard training and – bliss – a treatment room for the big people.

You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you then take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, a family theme park for ages two to 13 and designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). If the offspring are still swinging about with excessive energy, Go Ape! at Buxton Country Park might let off suitable steam, or you could try knocking them out at award-winning Conkers in the National Forest.

Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak.

Cyclists can pedal off along the Tissington and Manifold Trails, both mostly flat, and for walkers there are hundreds of miles’ worth of paths to pick from, such as the 46-mile Limestone Way, the 55-mile Derwent Valley Heritage Way or parts of the Pennine Way.

More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at Matlock’s Mining Museum.

Also recommended is Haddon Hall, a medieval manor house at Bakewell, used in reels of film sets from Jane Eyre (thrice) to The Princess Bride, and described as ‘the most perfect house to survive from the middle ages’.

Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as Cavalier horsemanship displays (the seventeenth century sort), exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, a new outdoor play area, indoor riding school and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
