General

  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area

If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne.

For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail; it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers; it’s been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious famous visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie.

Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from the town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera.

Also perfectly, Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside.

Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Customer: access to the swimming pool is not included in the rate and is charged £2.50 per adult and £1.50 per child per session.

Group bookings of 4 or more people under 25 are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

This site is immaculately kept. We had a very bad start on arrival due to the weather however, the staff were very accommodating and suggested an alternative pitch to the one we had been allocated, which worked out well.
Plenty of staff around to help. The pool is great, the park is big enough for the kids to play/run around. Would definitely recommend for families as this site links up nicely with the tissington trail so the kids had a super bike ride and we stopped off at tissington for a lovely lunch in Herbert’s tea rooms.

    Disliked:

Possibly a need for more showers during peak season, that said it wouldn’t put us off going again.

The pool was lovely. The kitchen area and toilets were kept clean but the site was quite empty of tents so think this helped. Staff were friendly. Area was beautiful. Lively walks very close.

    Disliked:

The weather was terrible which made it very muddy. Not many showers so I think would be challenging the tents side if site was busy.

They called prior to arriving to inform that the area was boggy, and we wouldn't be able to place our awning. The facilities were fine.

Informed gent who showed us to our pitch, that we were going to be away for the best part of Friday. Placed our reservation ticket on our electric lead Friday am, as we were in a camper van. Returned to site at 7pm a couple had parked a caravan under instruction from the site in our spot. Collected our discarded electric lead and went home pretty dissapointed.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn the grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park.

If you have younger sorts along, a less adrenaline-based but not less quiet time is available at the ‘Young Fun’ part of the park, which had CBeebies Land new for 2014 among various other totworthy fun. Alton Towers’s separate water park also has areas for the very small, along with hundreds of water features, lifeguard training and – bliss – a treatment room for the big people.

You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you then take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, a family theme park for ages two to 13 and designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). If the offspring are still swinging about with excessive energy, Go Ape! at Buxton Country Park might let off suitable steam, or you could try knocking them out at award-winning Conkers in the National Forest.

Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak.

Cyclists can pedal off along the Tissington and Manifold Trails, both mostly flat, and for walkers there are hundreds of miles’ worth of paths to pick from, such as the 46-mile Limestone Way, the 55-mile Derwent Valley Heritage Way or parts of the Pennine Way.

More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at Matlock’s Mining Museum.

Also recommended is Haddon Hall, a medieval manor house at Bakewell, used in reels of film sets from Jane Eyre (thrice) to The Princess Bride, and described as ‘the most perfect house to survive from the middle ages’.

Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as Cavalier horsemanship displays (the seventeenth century sort), exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, a new outdoor play area, indoor riding school and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
