If had to pick a Peak District place, it might just possibly be Ashbourne. Let us count for you the whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail; it’s seven miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers; it’s been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. We’re not a bit surprised that famous visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although we suspect they didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie.

We’ll add to our list Ashbourne Heights Park (the site formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from the town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but we suggest you bring your camera.

Also perfectly, Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool – we wouldn’t dream of suggesting to very small tots it’s the water park at Alton Towers – and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside.

Other facilities at the park include a shop, picnic area, launderette, covered dishwashing areas, showers, loos and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop.
