General

  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area

If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne.

For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail; it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers; it’s been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious famous visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie.

Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from the town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera.

Also perfectly, Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside.

Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Customer: access to the swimming pool is not included in the rate and is charged £2.50 per adult and £1.50 per child per session.

Group bookings of 4 or more people under 25 are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

We had just bought our first tent so thought we would stay local and try it out. The staff were very friendly, shower blocks regularly cleaned.

    Disliked:

The shop on-site closed at 5pm which we got told 7pm so after we had been cycling all afternoon and needed a few bits for tea, we weren't able to get and with it being a Sunday all the main shops in town were shut. We were also quite a way from the toilet block and having small children wasn't great as they never made it to the toilet on time meaning i had to then wash sleeping bags.

My first camping experiance at the age of 46....it was going to be a first and last or first of many camping experiance. Glad to say it was the latter, i think Ashbourne Heights made this a very enjoyable few days away, great location, great amenities and very friendly staff. Right on the Tissington trail which we walked for hours with our 2 dogs, will defiantly be going back at some point in the near future.

Rally Room, pitch sizes, everything within easy walking distance, good park close to the tent, lovely birds of prey/chickens and level pitches.

    Disliked:

The showers near Tissington square had an offensive smell - though they were clean and tidy. Shop opening hours were some times a little bit of a nuisance - though we totally understand cost effectiveness with staffing.
Would have loved to see some board games etc in the Rally Room.

We had a great pitch in front of the park so the children were really happy! Led down to our pitch by the owner. Short walk to Tissington and short drive to Ashbourne. Great atmosphere, will be coming back later in the year to explore the area more!

Don't camp here if you like a camp fire 19/06/2018

Great facilities - toilet/shower blocks were excellent, rally room was nice to have, indoor pool was great.

Nice location, although the walk to Ashbourne is a lot more than 2 miles...

    Disliked:

Overly officious in terms of rules

Van drove round one evening - he asked us if we were having a nice evening, and we said yes, and he then told us to put a lid on our fire. If I'd noticed open fires weren't allowed I would not have stayed here - there is no reason not to allow open fires in controlled braziers. It's just lazy to say that it's a fire risk. Unattended fires are obviously a risk but camping is all about sitting around a fire in the evening.

For this reason alone, we won't be back.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that certain parts of your holiday did not meet your expectations.
Our ‘No Open Fires’ rule is due t us being within the Peak District National Park. The National Park Wardens advice against allowing open fires due to the risk of wildfires. Camp fires are permitted as long as they have a mesh cover. This allows heat to circulate but protects the environment from stray sparks causing a fire in the nearby woodland. We don’t believe this rule is unreasonable or unnecessarily restrictive.

Was lovely, very beautiful place, well maintained! Only saw two staff members as we were away all day but they were very nice & friendly. Liked the fact you could sit in the Rally Room with a tv and our own alcohol, which works out cheaper than any bar which is great! There’s a lovely play park all the children looked like they were having a lot of fun, will definitely take my children next time! There’s an owl, hawks (I think) and retired chickens which is lovely for children too.

    Disliked:

Only dislike was the showers were covered in grass from peoples feet which isn’t really down to the park it’s down to other customers.

Plenty of grassy space where we were pitched. Plenty of toilets and showers kept in a good state.
This is a large campsite but dividing it up into different separate fields seemed to work.
Near to the Tissington Trail so a walk or cycle into Ashbourne was very easy.
For families, a large play area with climbing structures and an indoor pool looked useful.
Shop had good stock of non-perishable goods.

    Disliked:

Awkward not to be able to drive right up to Reception, had to park car and van without blocking road to go and register. We arrived at the weekend and felt it was very busy but getting much quieter Sunday afternoon as people went home.
Near us was a veritable village of long stay caravans which looked regimented but that did not affect us.

Very quiet although we did stay at a very quiet time, showers were hot, well stocked shop and nice woodland dog walk. Large pitches. On the doorstep of Tissington Trail so some great walks to be had.

    Disliked:

Pitches weren't very even and I'm not sure how the facilities would hold up when they are busy.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn the grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park.

If you have younger sorts along, a less adrenaline-based but not less quiet time is available at the ‘Young Fun’ part of the park, which had CBeebies Land new for 2014 among various other totworthy fun. Alton Towers’s separate water park also has areas for the very small, along with hundreds of water features, lifeguard training and – bliss – a treatment room for the big people.

You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you then take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, a family theme park for ages two to 13 and designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). If the offspring are still swinging about with excessive energy, Go Ape! at Buxton Country Park might let off suitable steam, or you could try knocking them out at award-winning Conkers in the National Forest.

Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak.

Cyclists can pedal off along the Tissington and Manifold Trails, both mostly flat, and for walkers there are hundreds of miles’ worth of paths to pick from, such as the 46-mile Limestone Way, the 55-mile Derwent Valley Heritage Way or parts of the Pennine Way.

More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at Matlock’s Mining Museum.

Also recommended is Haddon Hall, a medieval manor house at Bakewell, used in reels of film sets from Jane Eyre (thrice) to The Princess Bride, and described as ‘the most perfect house to survive from the middle ages’.

Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as Cavalier horsemanship displays (the seventeenth century sort), exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, a new outdoor play area, indoor riding school and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
