Heron's Rural Retreat: All grass pitches are situated around the perimeter of a tree-lined field

General

  • Secluded site set on a working farm in the Aylesbury Vale
  • Five minutes' drive to Leighton Buzzard; next to Rushmere Country Park
  • A mile from the Grand Union Canal towpath and a waterside pub

Heron's Reach is a peaceful site set on the grounds of a Bedfordshire farm. The site's name is apt indeed, as all manner of wildlife can be spotted flying, scuttling and swooping its way around the main tree-lined field. This natural haven is also home to domesticated animals, including free-range hens and sheep.

The Aylesbury Vale is a hilly part of the world, but the only slope at Heron's Reach is gentle and flattens out towards the bottom. The main site area is lined by trees and is adjacent to Rushmere Country Park, a 400-acre forest with footpaths and cycle trails to explore.

It's a short walk up from the field to the handsome old farmhouse and its outbuildings. This is where useful facilities like parking, toilets and showers can be found.

Barbecues are allowed on site as long as they're raised off the grass. Charcoal and firelighters are available to purchase, so you won't have to make a dash to find the nearest forecourt or lug sacks of fuel around. In need of a supermarket? You'll be sorted if you make a stop-off in Leighton Buzzard (five minutes' drive).

Heron's Reach is a mile away from waterside walks along the Grand Union Canal and a popular towpath pub, where you can sip a cool drink and watch the narrowboats bobbing by. Another pub, this time with vistas over Aylesbury Vale, is an easy 20-minute walk away.

Quiet countryside location. Pitches are 50m apart which far exceeded expectations, positioned thoughtfully across the farm within easy reach of the toilet/shower block. Shared facilities were clean and had everything we needed. Instructions to get to the site were excellent.

Public footpaths cross the bottom of the site and we could walk to both recommended pubs for good food. Also walking and biking opportunities in nearby forest were easy to find and enjoyable. Great Brickhill nearby has great history dating back to Cromwell. A real find sandwiched between Milton Keynes, Luton and the M1.

    Disliked:

The English Weather! If there has been heavy rain, pack the wellies to walk on the lower paths nearby.

This is my kind of site. A lovely working farm with friendly hosts only too happy to share their corner of this beautiful countryside. The perfect place to pitch up in a camper van full of kids looking to make their own adventures. The toilets were clean and the showers were hot. There’s plenty of good walking right from the farm or just sit back and enjoy the panoramic views as well as the buzzards, red kites, cuckoos... We couldn’t stay long, but we’ll definitely be back.

We stayed in Connie’s Shepard Hut and were so pleased with our stay. From the moment we arrived we felt very welcomed. The hut and other facilities were spotless, and really cosy. We were left bread, milk, eggs, tea, coffee etc, and the kitchenette area was perfect for a short stay. We were provided with fire wood to keep the log burner going to keep us warm. Rachel and Julian were really friendly and welcoming, would definitely like to return.

Owners very lovely, and helpful. They are just getting starting with the whole shepherds hut venture, and we were first to stay. So our accommodation had a few teething issues, so do with electrics mainly; and a few useful items missing. But I have to assume that these will be corrected as they asked for feedback ( and were given it) in order to do so. Connie is an ex military vehicle, and made of metal - so if your expecting all country cottage wooded twee finish then stay in one of their other huts that they are very close to opening. Good cooking facilities inside and some food items provided which was unexpected and welcome - would have thought it too expensive if these had been and 'add-on' like some places.
Farm is very rural in feel, very quiet , and we were encouraged to explore it. Loos all clean. One shower ( warm but solar powered) Everything is solar/green and recycled and don't expect the 'slick and swanky' style of glamping either. Simplicity.
Its very close to a pub, and close to the Grand Union Canal - great for walking and visiting other pubs too.

Thank you - was a pleasure hosting you both. Your feedback was really helpful and I can report it's all been acted upon! Best wishes, Rachel

We had a lovely stay at Herons rural Retreat. It is exactly just that. A real Rural retreat. However there is also a luxury element as it has Bell Tents set up for Glamping.

We took out our micro camper van with Awning and toilet shower. So we wanted a wild experience but not quite brave enough to go completely off grid as we were testing out the set up. The site was perfect for this giving us the wild experience but knowing there was a clean tidy toilet and shower block a short walk away if things went wrong

The site has some beautiful views and there were some lovely walks we went on. Also there's a nearby village literally 5 minutes drive with a co-op where you can get any additional supplies.

The owners made us feel very welcome showing us where we could pitch up and coming to make sure that everything was ok.

So it was a lovely short stay we had and we will definitely go there again.

Local attractions

Rambles through Rushmere Country Park (five minutes' walk) will definitely be on the agenda, whether that entails taking the sculpture circuit and spotting wooden beasties, cycling on its well-maintained cross-country trails or watching over the kids at the play area.

Psssst, can you keep a secret? Also close by is Bletchley Park (15 minutes' drive), a former stately home that was commandeered by the army during the Second World War and turned into one of the world's top code-breaking hubs. The exhibits here explain all about the cipher that turned the tide of the conflict, but also give insight into the daily lives of the individual boffins who ran the show.

Other Milton Keynes-based adventures can be had at Daytona Outdoor Go-Karting (15 minutes) and Snozone (20 minutes). Out of town, animals like rhinos, tigers, elephants and bears can be surveyed from the comfort of your car at Woburn Safari Park (20 minutes), after which it's a toss-up between the top-rated Chafor Wine Estate (30 minutes) and the Silverstone Circuit (35 minutes).
