Convenient location, big site but noisy next to road and train station 20/02/2017

The site is huge, but being winter season all pitches were concentrated nearer the entrance.
    Pitches nice and level.
Toilet block was nice - Underfloor heating (although a little too roasting to be honest!) and very clean.
Nice to have a little foyer area outside the ladies/mens/disabled, so the kids could wait for parents to finish etc with free Wifi available.
Site has loads of little play areas dotted around the site, although all a bit tired.
Reception had a shop which was quite well stocked with groceries, camping bits, toys/games etc. Found the lady that served me a little unhelpful and uninformative when we arrived but subsequent people we dealt with were lovely.
It is a convenient site (we’re from Cornwall and were visiting family in and around Bedfordshire) close to the A1, not far from the M1 and with Bedford not far either. Arlesey train station is right next door which is handy if you want to get anywhere by train (I believe you can go into London).

    Disliked:

Wet weather meant the ground and gravel roads and gravel hardstanding were pretty muddy.
We were glad of our hookup extension lead, as a normal one wouldn’t have been long enough to reach the power unit – they and the taps are set quite far back from the pitch (we were on pitch 29 FYI). Our pitch was only just big enough for the car as well as the caravan & awning, but only parked on the muddy grass which was pretty churned up by the time we left.
Toilets were a bit of a walk - Haywards block was our nearest, although still quite a walk despite requesting to be close due to mobility issues.
Despite there being a couple of other small blocks, I can imagine that in the summer there would be long queues for the showers. In the Haywards block there were just 3 Ladies showers and it is a huge site.
Wifi hotspot in Haywards was a very slow connection so don’t rely on it for much!
Site has loads of little play areas dotted around the site, although all a bit tired and for some reason they’d chosen half term to dig them all up to put new safety matting in, closing them off for a couple of days which was a shame. We took a walk around the site to take the kids to play on another, but they were all being dug up or too dirty to use/swings missing etc.
The gate was a nuisance – had to pay £20 deposit for a key on arrival and had to go through the palava of opening it to get in or out after about 4pm every day – a big heavy farm-style gate with a big chain and padlock and a heavy section that had to be lifted off to open it. The ground had been dug and recovered underneath so it was a struggle to pull the gate open once unlocked. Then once your car is through you have to go through the palava of dragging it shut and locking again. Lots of muddy puddles to contend with, and not a great experience when you have mobility issues.
They were also digging the gate up during the day on some days so having gone round the one-way system to exit, found we couldn’t go through and had to go back to the other end of the site where they’d temporarily opened another gate. Would have been nice to have a sign or something. So on our departure day we made sure we checked if the gate was in use before towing the caravan round there.
Similarly, one day the environment agency were doing a fish survey and their vans completely blocked the one way route to the exit so we had to reverse and go against the one-way. Mind you, the site vans seemed to ignore the one way and speed restrictions on a regular basis flying round the corner in a direction you wouldn’t expect way over the speed limit.
The site is right on a busy A road and right next to the station/rail line so was very noisy early until late which isn’t ideal.
Access lane is a bit awkward – be warned. It comes up on you very suddenly and if you miss it, you have to do a double- double-back as entry to the slip road is restricted to one direction. In the dark, it was a bit difficult to spot and kerbs can be easily clipped with cars, let along caravans. The lane is one-way too so to exit you have to go down to the train station and round a couple of sharp narrow bends to get back out onto the A road (again, restricted to turn left only, so if you want to head the other direction you have to go down to double-back round the roundabout)
