Parlez-vous franglais? You will once you’ve had a holiday at Le Vaugrat Campsite on Guernsey, a fab holiday location betwixt the UK and France that manages somehow to feel like both countries at the same time.
It’s not just French and English that find a harmonious balance around here. On their site, in the grounds of an 18th-century farmhouse up at the tippy-top of the island, the Laine family have also worked hard to create a blend of peaceful outdoor life and comfortable facilities.
Around the site’s fields you’ll have plenty of space to spread all your kit out, light your barbie, run around or just put your feet up and look up into the trees. If the weather’s not playing ball, or when there’s a big event to watch, you can get comfy in the lounge and TV room instead. Social media addicts can charge devices here as well, and use the free wifi.
It’ll only take you five minutes or so to drive to the nearest supermarket, but in anticipation of those times when even that’s too far, the owners have opened up a little shop where you can pick up essential items. There’s also an on-site launderette (with washing machine, tumble dryer and ironing facilities) to keep your holiday wardrobe looking chic – you are in almost-France, after all.
Two toilet blocks and a shower block cater for all your ablutionary needs, including baby changing facilities and access for less mobile guests.
The crowning glory, though, could well be the location – less than 10 minutes’ walk from an off-the-beaten track white sandy beach, and with sea views from much of the site itself? Say yes, say oui – either way, you’ll be glad you did.

Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.
Large groups: check the listing page for any group restrictions set out in the terms and section titled ‘Please note’.

Bijou little Guernsey is only 25 square miles in total area, so wherever you want to go, it will be within easy reach. From your site up in on the north coast you could walk to several attractions, or catch the round-island bus from a nearby stop.
The island’s 20th-century history is entwined with that of World War II, and you there are several places to visit that celebrate and commemorate the local role in the conflict. A 20-minute drive from the site is the German Occupation Museum, which has lots of displays including weapons and uniforms, as well as a reconstruction of shops as they would have been.
Close by is the German Underground Hospital, where you can experience what it might have been like to work or be treated in this strange environment. There are also lots of German fortifications left around the coast of the island; the restored gun bunker at Fort Hommet is closest to the site and can be reached on foot in around an hour.
One of the island’s must-sees is The Little Chapel, built in the early 20th century by an exiled French priest and thought to be the smallest consecrated church in the world (about eight people can fit inside). Every surface both inside and out is completely covered with a mosaic of broken china, pebbles and shells – look closely to see the details and then step back to take in the overall effect.
At the end of the day, do as the locals do and pack up a picnic or barbecue and walk 10 minutes to Port Grat beach to dine as you watch the sun set over the white sands.
