A beach – bien sûr (you’ll no doubt have guessed that from the name). But not just any old beach… take yourselves off to Le Nauzan-Plage for your hols and you’ll be staying in an area known as the Côte de Beauté, a gorgeous (as you may have also divined) coastal region that’s rather well-endowed with lovely stretches of sand. From this riverside spot in Vaux-sur-Mer it’s a mere 10-minute walk down to the nearest beach, and there are heaps more a short drive (or bracing walk) away, along with plenty of other stuff to fill your days – forest walks, coastal bike rides, golf, a zoo, sailing lessons, boat trips… It’s not just the surrounds that folks flock here for though; there’s also a fably family-friendly vibe on site, in a peaceful park filled with trees and flowers. Two heated pools (one covered, one open-air) take care of swims in all weathers, and there’s heaps of fun to be had for the small sorts between the paddling pool, the playground, the bouncy castle and the kids’ club activities that run through the summer. Restaurants, shops and a super seafood market are all within walking distance of this village site, and there’s also a restaurant and bar on site for those days when you’d prefer to expend minimal energy (or need emergency pool-time snacks).

Llocs d'interès

The beach in Vaux-sur-Mer is mighty inviting for lounging; if you prefer a more active time there’s also a watersports centre offering sailing lessons along with kayaking, paddleboarding, jetskis and land yachting. Golf and horse riding are both 10 minutes’ drive away, and there are lovely walks and bike rides along the coast or up in the Coubre Forest, 16 kilometres away. If that all sounds a bit energetic, boat trips run from Royan and La Tremblade taking in lots of coastal sights along the way (including Napoleon’s Fort Boyard, later used as a military prison). Tigers, meerkats, giraffes and polar bears are among the inhabitants at Palmyre Zoo, 20 minutes’ drive up the coast; time your visit to coincide with a sealion show, then wander around the three-hectare ape space, spying the animals as they roam around their islands, rocks and waterfalls.
