General

The Island at Durweston Mill really is an island – a five-acre island in fact, surrounded by the River Stour at the base of Hod Hill – a waterside campsite in a wonderful setting for nights under canvas. The camping experience here is simple, off-grid and off the beaten track, just the ticket for anyone who’d rather swim in rivers than swimming pools.

It takes all of two minutes to walk from your tent to the private, three-tiered weir, where you can relax and have a splash in the Stour, or stroll to the North Dorset Trailway.

Given the wild nature of this place, a big part of the attraction is getting out and exploring. It’s a great location for fishing and photography – or launching boats, kayaks and canoes onto the Stour (bring your own please) and paddling up or down stream.

In late summer, you can forage apples and cherries from the trees lining the Trailway, or blackberries in the bushes leading to the pub (a good excuse for a visit to the pub).

Stourpaine (five minutes’ walk) has a pub and deli selling local produce and handy essentials, and the local farm shop (five minutes’ drive) sells locally sourced, free-range meats, fruit, and veg. Don’t fancy cooking? Blandford Forum (10 minutes’ drive) has plenty of takeaways and restaurants too.

And at the end of the day, you get to retreat back to your little patch of peaceful wilderness on the Island. If you don’t mind foregoing a shower for the weekend and prefer to bathe in a river instead, then you’ve come to the right place. The pitches measure 400 metres squared and have room for up to 10 people. There are no additional charges for setting up additional tents and structures, plus well-behaved canines are very welcome.

    Everything! Plenty of space, very quiet site (no recorded music, hooray), beautiful setting, swimming in the river, fire pit, absence of artificial light. Loved the simplicity and the absence of facilities - such a relief. Will definitely return, we had a wonderful time. (Also Portaloos were the cleanest I've ever experienced!)

    Our stay was amazing. Charlotte was lovely and answered all our questions no matter how small, quickly. We are first time campers so we had many question. When we arrived, the children were so excited to see the bell tent. It was good quality, clean and definitely was looked after. Our other family members pitched their tents next to us and there was plenty of space to do it.

    The grass area was well kept so it was nice for the children to have lots of space to run around freely and it was all open so we could see them at all times. We particularly enjoyed that each bell tent had plenty of space in between each other and it didn’t feel cramped or invasive to other campers who were there. This was perfect for our young children as they can be loud and bed time can be quite whiney haha.

    The facilities that were available were fine for the length of stay we were there (3 nights). The weir was incredible. The water was cold, but once you’re in, we all enjoyed it. Definitely a good idea to have brought our swim shoes for that as getting in and out was a little tricky, but we got used to it after the first time in, the children had wetsuits too which is advisable for any young children going. It might’ve been cold water, but after bathing in there, we did feel really fresh.

    The fire pit was a really good bonus. We spent all our nights sat around it and toasted marshmallows and just enjoyed watching the flame. It rained on some of the days we were there so it was nice having the fire pit to keep warm.

    The supermarkets are really close by so that was great for picking up bits for dinner and breakfast. We had bbq dinners over the fire pit which was lovely. (We brought our own fire pit grill to go over the logs.)

    Overall our stay was so much fun and we all really enjoyed it (10 adults, 5 children), we all decided that 3 nights was not long enough haha. Charlotte and Simon were both so friendly and were available whenever we needed them.

    Wonderful site, lots of room for children to run around.

    Very secure with locked gate and CCTV.

    Charlie, Dumps and Hannah professional, cheery, friendly, polite and helpful.

    Cleanest portaloos I've ever seen!

    Bell tent stayed completely dry despite heavy rainfall.

    Wonderful to fall asleep to the sound of rushing water and owl hoots.

    Complementary marshmallows in tent!

    Made my first fire in the fire pit , bucket list moment!

    Would love to visit again.
