48 The Dog Tour Base Camp

Liked: We booked this site due to the reviews and the dog friendly comments. I was walking from Barmouth to Wolverhampton over the course of the bank holiday weekend in May 2013 and we needed base camp. Jason was super welcoming, super friendly and we basically had the place to ourselves.
Although our first time camping the facilities especially those lovely hot showers were brilliant on my tired muscles when walking my 8 dogs for the 12.5 - 13.5 miles per day across Wales. 8 miles away is the garage, butty bar and attached to garage is a small convenience store. Welshpool is 12 or so miles away with Oswestry was 11, so not too far to civilisation. About 3 mile away further in to Llandrinio was smaller garage and convenience store. Civilisation is near enough with either a good walk or a bike ride.

Now the place - a bit of peace and quiet, bird singing, cows mooing and sheep baaing! So if you want tranquil time out from hectic work or life then this soothes the soul. As we had the place basically to ourselves we loved it for the space it gave to the dogs and experience of camping without bothering others. There are some working collies off into the distance and they could be heard starting their day - but most people would sleep through their excitement (our dogs did!)

The facilities from what I remember on school camping were second to none. Hot Hot Hot shower and very clean toilets. We used the bigger field which with a windy night and with it dropping to zero one night is unsheltered compared to the meadow! So if going out of normal summer temperature be advised to have balaclava and gloves!

Jason checked on us regularly, and even screened my kids when they came up to ensure our safety! Lovely friendly place that has good support facilities! The fees are reasonable and the charge for a plug in for my husbands motorcycle battery was very reasonable.

We would definitely be using this facility again! Maybe just the two of us as an access to some of the lovely history of Wales on a long weekend with just the motorcycles!

Disliked: I think they were doing some helicopter practicing overhead on a few nights - in bed early for early start! Nothing that the campsite could do about it!

I think maybe a sign or two on the corners of the fields perhaps done by the wood craft man on the 2nd turning and at the turn after bridge would help folks if they did not use the instructions on the campsite website which are the most accurate!

Staying in the crows nest with our dog looking over lovely views!

Liked: I liked the fact there was plenty of space to walk the dog and roam the land especially seeing the swans on the nearby river :)
The crows nest was small but with everything you needed (although a laptop or i pod etc is essential) know one disturbed us and it was very peaceful would definately go again. It had everything we needed for our dog which was one of the reasons we choose here :)

Disliked: It was cold the small heater we had just wasn't enough think maybe that was the time of year aswell it would be lovely and cool in the summer months.

Liked: We liked the personal touch that this campsite offers. We were all (including our dogs) made to feel at home from our first day and the owners checked that everything was ok during our stay.

There was plenty of room/privacy between pitches which meant that we could enjoy our dinner and evenings by the campfire without interruption/disruption from other campers.

We also enjoyed the surrounding area which offers a variety of different walks. The wet weather did not put us off as we were able to use the facilties, including hot showers and a communal area with a fire to warm up afterwards.

We would definitely recommend Sychpwll to our friends and family, and will be back again.

Disliked: There was not anything that we disliked about our camping trip (a part from one wet day ; )).

- new faciliaties
- friendly hosts

Disliked: - a little cut-off: you need to drive to pubs/shops
- wood bundle felt expensive at £10 (enough for just one night's worth)

Liked: Everything. I would go again as the toilets were to a high standard, the showers were great, not like some you get where they just dribble out, they were nice and hot just like having a shower at home. The kids had fun running round they can't go far and it was quite safe for them to go and explore. The kids loved the horse always going to see him.

The two guys who run the centre are very welcoming nothing was too much trouble. The camp fire on our last night was fab.

Disliked: The rain but hey it's Wales

Disliked: The location, if you want to be near any form of civilisation then don't go here, the shop and pub were a drive away, there would be a very long walk to anything, the local pub doesn't serve food sun-weds the nearest supermarket is over 15 miles away x

Liked: We were made to feel very welcome when we arrived .The owners showed us round on arival and also the following day shared with us the buildings ,how they had ecologically been built and gave us a history of work since purchased .Everyone was friendly and didnt bother you ,just letting you wander around and explore, but very willing toshare knowledge with you if an interest was shown. On the instructions given on the website we easily found the place although it was secluded which was jut what we wanted .Our dog was welcomed and enjoyed the attention given by staff on site.We particularly liked the picture in the room we hired which intrigued us when we worked out exactly what it was and the room was exceptionally clean and welcoming. We are looking forward to going again for a relaxing walking weekend and the owner didnt pressurise us into leaving which was lovely .So envious of the lifestyle ! Sandra and Steph Morton

Disliked: Perhaps a curtain at the window over the barn may be an idea if people are staying in the barn for privacy --but it wasnt an issue .

Liked: This is an absolutely stunning location and has been well thought out to give the best in facilities whilst also keeping the sense of being out in the countryside. Jason and the owner were welcoming and very helpful and really have a vision for the site.
As quite a large group we sometimes struggle to find places to take us but Sychpwll was accommodating and a perfect fit for us and our 2 doggies.

Liked: Warm & dry room near the pitches offering hot water throughout the day & in the morning. Space to wash pots and keep dry if there's poor weather.
Despite being a new site the owner was extremely helpful and aimed to please!
New shower and toilet facilities.
Wild meadow in the centre of the field
Lovely & peaceful
Owner provided fire wood for £10 and urns (decent amount to keep you going)
Rodney's pillar nearby provides a decent walk with super views!

Disliked: Location- tricky to find but follow the directions on the website as satnav got us slightly lost!

No soap to wash hands- so take some hand sanitiser gel.

Liked: My partner and I booked two nights at the centre with our two dogs. It was a good price and the staff were lovely. Unfortunately we had to cut it short and only stayed one night because our dogs would not settle in the tent. It was a great camping site though and you can pitch wherever you like. The site allows BBQ and camp fires and they don't make a big fuss over the size of your tent or any extras you bring. Would defiantly recomend!

Disliked: The weather wasn't great as it rained but this can not be helped in the UK. Could not fault the centre. The only feedback I would give is to put up more signs to the centre as it's not an easy one to find and the Sat Nav doesnt take you to the right location. Saying that if you ring the staff they will direct you and are really helpful.

Liked: Myself and my fellow campers thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the manager of the site was nothing but helpful and welcoming and all that was asked of us was to respect the site and our 'neighbors'. The site itself was well maintained and the shower/toilet facilities were clean and tidy. The surrounding welsh countryside was beautiful and not too far away were some lovely pubs and local shops.

Disliked: The only downside was the rain - not the sites fault of course, but we shall return hopefully when the weather is better!!

Liked: Both myself & my girlfriend stayed here. The Owners were very nice & made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. This camp site is in the middle of no where & gave the feeling of tranquillity which we loved.
We were allowed to pitch our tent where ever we wanted & have a camp fire (they provide the wood) so we could keep warm & have marshmallows which was great. Onsite facilities were clean & they even have a kitchen which you can use to have a cup of tea or coffee (using their electric kettle) ,wash up any utensils or keep warm. We paid £6/person/night which is cheap compared to other places. Would definitely recommend!
