The Wareham Wail
Where is it? Oakfield Farm, Verwood, Wareham, Dorset, BH31 6JJ England
Good company, good beer, good food and, most importantly, good singing. These are the key ingredients of the ‘Wareham Wail’, a folk festival which brings together experienced and novice singers alike for a weekend of traditional, unaccompanied song.
Although well-known faces in the folk world are in attendance, no bands are officially booked. Rather, the emphasis is on spontaneous 'sings', where participants share lyrics, ideas and singing techniques in a relaxed environment, moving from tent to tent as the mood takes them.
Previous years have generated such gems as 'My piggy lies over the fire' (to the tune of 'My Bonnie lies over the ocean') and 'The sprig of thyme', reflecting the importance of top notch food as part of the experience. A hog roast, cream teas and a mediaeval banquet are all on offer via reasonably priced meal tickets, although there is also the option to self cater. Tickets £21 to £25.
