Edinburgh International Book Festival
Where is it? Charlotte Square Gardens, Edinburgh, Lothian, EH1 2NE Scotland
Part of Edinburgh's unparalleled suite of arts festivals, this brilliant book festival sets up camp in a tented village in the leafy Charlotte Square Gardens.
We predict that you'll find it hard to choose between the 750 events on offer, starring nearly 800 top authors from 40 countries. Scotland is of course well represented, with writers such as Ian Rankin, AL Kennedy and Alexander McCall Smith in attendance.
Join the discussion at one of the high brow debates on contemporary issues, or get your own creative juices flowing by booking into an all-day writing class or a shorter writer-led masterclass (topics include the rules of writing comedy, or how to make it as a children's writer).
An extensive programme of readings and events for kids of all ages - many of them free - runs alongside the main festival, featuring children's literature superstars such as Nick Sharratt, Jacqueline Wilson and Children's Laureate Julia Donaldson.
In the evenings, the cabaret-style Speigeltent hosts an interesting mix of free 'Unbound' events: poetry, performance, storytelling and song. The organisers promise that every night will be a 'white knuckle literary experience'!
