  • Small family-run site in the village of Llanvetherine
  • 10 minutes' drive from Abergavenny and the Brecon Beacons
  • Footpath leading from the site to Offa's Dyke Path
Hiking boots at the ready, folks – Church Cottage Caravan and Camping is in the little village of Llanvetherine, a prime spot for days spent stomping along the trails of the Brecon Beacons. This is classic Welsh countryside, with a little brook running through the site and gorgeous green views at every turn. It’ll take you mere minutes to drive to the eastern side of the Beacons from here, although you might equally consider leaving the wheels behind and striding out on foot: a path leads directly out to hook up with the Offa’s Dyke Path and the Three Castles Walk. In need of a good feed after your efforts? There’s a fab country pub five minutes’ drive away, or you could hit foodies’ fave Abergavenny in around 10 minutes for market stalls, Michelin stars and all sorts in between. There are lots of independent shops to poke around in here too if you fancy a break from the outdoorsy stuff. Back at base, all is kept quite simple to max out the peaceful vibes – spacious pitches are served by squeaky clean facilities, and there’s a wifi connection to help you plan your next path (or share view pics with the unfortunates back at work). Canine pals who want to get in on the Welsh wanderings are welcome to stay too.

Route directions

The site is very easy to find, just off the B4521. If you're arriving so Church Cottage is on your left, the entrance is a little tight so it's best to go on just past the gate, turn around and approach from your right.

Local attractions

It’s safe to say most folks are drawn here by the Brecon Beacons National Park – around its 500 or so square miles are heaps of options for leisurely strolls, mountain scrambles, mountain biking and horse riding (and a mountain railway for those whose legs won’t stretch to such endeavours). Heading in the other direction, Ross-on-Wye is half an hour away for days spent paddling canoes on the River Wye. The national park’s not the only place for a walk though: the Offa’s Dyke Path is a short trot away, and locals also advise wandering straight from the site to the ruins of Whitecastle, half an hour away on foot, before perhaps continuing on the rest of the Three Castles Walk. For a break from all the active pursuits, head to the Big Pit National Coal Museum or take the kids to Cantref Adventure Farm. Plus there’s a whole cluster of castles to conquer: Crickhowell, Raglan, Usk, Grosmont and Skenfrith castles are all within a half-hour drive.
