What a bewitching place. And most especially for kids: Wookey Farm, a couple of miles from the famed Wookey Hole Caves (and their famed witch), is a tiptop option for small sorts and their owners, with loads of space to run around and a menagerie of animals to coo over. Older offspring will be sizzling with excitement on hearing that they can stoke flames and get social at the communal campfire area, while bigger folk will probably be content to bring along a firepit and laze idly on the family pitch, taking in the views of the Mendip Hills and towards Hembury and Yarley hills… Off site, it's three and a half miles from the farm to cutely compact Wells, six miles to Glastonbury, and a drive of 45 minutes to the coast at Weston-super-Mare. The site is on a small, family-run goat farm where guests are most welcome to meet the menagerie (sheep, pigs, hens and a donkey live here too) and find out all about running a farm. All pitches are in a level two-and-a-half-acre space with marked pitches or in an overflow meadow bordered by the River Axe: you can opt to be as mixed in or as far away as you like. Splashing, paddling and critter spotting can all be had in the river, as can back and forthing merrily on the rope tyre swing over the water (more swings are around the site if this seems slightly too hair-raising). Wookey Farm is an eco-friendly site, with emphasis on keeping things as natural as possible. Facilities are basic but well kept: four compost toilets and washbasins, cleaned twice a day; a washing-up area with water tap alongside; and plenty of facilities for sorting your rubbish (recycling and food waste contributions are keenly welcomed). For those barbecue supplies, the farm is just down the lane from Wookey village's café, shop and three pubs. There's also an on-site farm shop selling the farm's own goat's cheese, goat's milk and meat, along with alcohol, snacks and gifts.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked: Good campsite, good recycling facilities, good pitches (chose our own space, no marked pitches), good shop, good things for smallet kids (helping with donkeys)

Disliked: Grass on pitch very long, no sawdust for compost toilets.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked: Gorgeous location. My son loved paddling in the stream and playing on the rope swings dotted about. Blackboard with name to tell us where to go was cool! Good recycling and friendly campsite.

Disliked: The weather! Lol! If I'm nitpicking, the grass was very long... its always easier to pitch on shorter grass, especially when it's wet.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked: Both my children (aged 14 and 10) loved the river and rope swing and the animals, it feels very open and spacious, so plenty of room to run and play games.

Disliked: We could only find one toilet emptying facility which we weren't confident enough to drive up to.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked: Nice spot near stream with pretty views.

Disliked: Grass was far too long for camping. Compost toilets stank. Despite stating there were washing up facilities, there was no hot water whenever I tried. Took our washing up home as only staying for a night. Would have been mad if staying longer

From the manager: Hi, I'm sorry the grass was so long - with all the rain in July and August, it has grown like crazy and it was hard to find a dry spell to mow. Otherwise we get complaints that people are ending up with wet cut grass in their tents. We have now replaced the gas cylinder so hot water is back - I'm sorry we hadn't realised it had run out. Glad you enjoyed the river and the views.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked: Such a lovely site, peaceful with a river running around it. Friendly people and a relaxed site with lovely views. Pub was close by and also a village shop / cafe. Easy base for visiting wookey hole. We loved our stay, kids especially loved the donkeys and being able to go and play in the river, will definitely be back.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked: We loved the donkeys and the fact that children are encouraged to muck in and help...all the signage around the farm is brilliant for helping educate children and help them understand the nature of the farm The farm shop was brill and we loved the cheese and apple juice. The farm is in a great location and we loved walking in the local countryside and visiting the nearby pubs..

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked: Lovely campsite. Animals are a nice touch and my children loved the stream and the swings scattered around.

Disliked: Toilets are very smelly but as they are compost toilets... what can you expect! Actual toilets were very clean and regularly checked.

Local attractions

The farm is within easy reach of many top spots as well as Wookey Hole Caves, Glastonbury, Wells and Weston-super-Mare: spectacular Cheddar Gorge is 20 minutes' drive away, Longleat and Bath within 50, and Bristol just under an hour. Quieter times await around the region's walks, such as along the 30 miles of the West Mendip Way running from Wells via Wookey to the sea at Uphill, or the Strawberry Line (also 30 miles), a traffic-free route across Somerset from Shepton Mallet to Clevedon. Closer to home, amble along the River Axe flowing through the farm. Till ringers and fashion fans should take their wallets to Clarks Village, 20 minutes away, for outlet shopping and the Shoe Museum.
