  • Steps from the Shropshire Union Canal
  • Adults-only and dog-friendly; canalside for dog walks
If you had thoughts on an ideal setting for a hol between England and Wales, Hadley Park might well be it. It's in the Shropshire countryside on the border with Wales, next to the Shropshire Union Canal, and a handsomely scenic walk from Whitchurch, Shropshire's oldest market town. Hadley Park is a family-owned and run site that's set up for adults only. It has a small pond where guests can fish – for free; a big sundeck overlooking the pond, and a fully licensed on-site café serving fresh local produce. You can also have your hair smartened up in the Hadley Park salon or arrange for an art class or private art tuition in the Waterside Art Studio: just enquire when booking using the details in your booking confirmation email. Amenities include a launderette and a washing-up area; there's also a chemical disposal point, and a modern well-kept toilet and shower block with disabled facilities. The park is adults-only and welcomes well-behaved dogs. A service station with fast food and coffee outlet is 400 yards away.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Got a refund for the stay.

Disliked: No details of bookings kept at "Reception". It isn't really a Reception, just a cafe. Female staff were aggressive. Mostly seasonal pitches. Condition of pitches on offer were poor. One underwater and one made up of different types of hard-core and uneven. Appearance of site was like a builders compound.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Struggling to find anything we liked

Disliked: Website misleading, pitches aren't all the same, driving on to the site it's full of potholes, our pitch was awful, mixture of stone and broken bricks is all I can think to describe it, plus grass around was awful looks like some kind of fake grass mixed in with real grass, think it would be helpful to tell customers that it is impossible to get a taxi at night, which all the locals where aware of and we found out at night, so had to walk back along the dark canal, not a pleasant task in the mud, the showers at first glance look lovely, but around the floor drain where filthy, also all the floor gets wet so nowhere dry to get dressed.

Local attractions

Staying close to home from Hadley Park, the old Shropshire town of Whitchurch is less than a mile away, and the walks of the Sandstone Trail as well as the hacks of the Bishop Bennet Way are easily accessible via the Shropshire and Union Canal on site. Elsewhere, several famed Shropshire and Cheshire sights are within 20 miles of the park, like Chester Cathedral and the city's Roman ruins and amphitheatre; Chester Zoo and Chester Racecourse; the fab follies of Hawkestone Park, and the llamas, alpacas and 50 acres of greenery of Cholmondeley Castle Gardens. Nearby Shrewsbury is famed for its annual flower show and for its Darwin Trail commemorating the life and work of evolution dude Charles Darwin who was born in the town. More modernly, a good range of plays are held at the new Severn Theatre and several riverside pubs and restaurants are around at which to while the night away. The bars, cafés and independent shops of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Llangollen are within driving distance: other top town picks are a picnic in Riverside Park, a stroll along Victoria Promenade, and a steam straight ahead on the Llangollen Railway.
