  • Small, peaceful site two miles from Okehampton
  • Coarse fishing lake and enclosed dog walking area on site
  • Shower and toilet block with underfloor heating and accessible area
Make your way to Appledore Park, two miles from Okehampton near the north Devon coast. With 4,500 recently planted trees and hedges (so far), spankingly clean facilities and so many little extra touches, ‘awesome’, ‘top notch’ and ‘knocked our socks off’ are just a few of the accolades Appledore has received from grateful guests. There are nine acres of site land at award-winning Appledore, all with sweet views of the Devon countryside and the park’s surrounding farmland, and landscaped to hold spacious pitches. Dogs are welcome, and handily, there is an enclosed dog walk through the trees or a large field to let them run in. The site's only five minutes' drive away from the A30 road to Cornwall, so it has easy access to the moors and as well as Cornwall, north Devon's beaches. If you’re arriving late, there’s a special late arrivals area with hook-up and water so you can get settled quickly (cuppa). To this smart idea, there is wifi throughout, a washing-up and veg prep area, and a room with charging points and info on the surrounding area. The amenities block has underfloor heating, private cubicles and an accessible area for disabled guests – and are so well maintained they've won a Loo of the Year award. Finally, fancy some fishing? Appledore Park has its own coarse fishing lake for guests and you can also cast off from the quay at Appledore village, take a boat out to the sea (the coast is around 30 miles from the site) or try your luck landing salmon or trout on the River Torridge.

Electric hardstanding pitch

Liked: Very clean and warm toilet and shower block, spacious pitch. Ideally situated near the edge of Dartmoor.

Disliked: We had a vey poor phone signal, but Wi-Fi is available at extra cost which we did not use. At busy times there was some road noise, but there is nothing anyone can do about that, it was more annoying than disturbing.

Electric hardstanding pitch

Liked: Quiet, well maintained friendly site with 2 dog walking areas - woods and the field. Facilities (shower block and toilets) are well maintained and looked after. Site wi-fi good and reasonably priced as our mobile signal was pretty poor. If you are looking for a quiet, no hassle get-away we recommend this site.

Electric hardstanding pitch

Liked: Showers and toilets spotless and lovely and warm. Dog walks would have been good if it wasn't so muddy.

Disliked: Showers was at a fixed temperature which was quite hot to start of with and my consern would be a child getting scorched. No near pub/shop to walk to as far as we know. Wifi very poor.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely thought out pitches. Plenty of room to walk the dogs, even though wellies are needed at the moment. Luckily there is a dog shower. The shower, toilet and washing up block is very well organised and beautifully clean. Some of the best showers blocks we have seen.

Disliked: Nothing

Electric hardstanding pitch

Liked: Small site with very friendly wardens who despite the rain stopped to say hello as we were walking the puppy. Large 4 acre field to walk dog around Onsite dog shower which was a good send as from the amount of rain we had the site was muddy. I can imagine it's a lovely place during drier times. It's a shame it rained so much we cut our stay short due to the mud. Not the sites fault. We would come back but only when it's drier. Shame as we were looking for a winter get away site. WiFi onsite which you get 1 hour free so we didn't bother as had one on board and had good signal and TV signal was good

Disliked: Found the motorhome pitch only just fitted the motorhome on so everytime we stepped outside we were straight onto mud which was unfortunate.

Electric hardstanding pitch

Liked: What a great site. The wardens, Lin and Rob, were so welcoming and helpful. Ideally located for Dartmoor and all that it has to offer. This site is definitely one for the dog lovers amongst us with a huge field for the dogs to run off lead and a wooded enclosed copse for them to search for those pesky rabbits!!! My 3 were in doggy heaven. A doggy wash down area is also provided which proved invaluable as the ground was somewhat waterlogged after all the recent rain. Wellies on this occasion were a must. The shower block and washing area were spotless with plenty of hot water. The pitches were a mixture of grass and hard standing and organised into groupings of 4-6 around the central shower block. Electric and water were easily accessible and no issues with supply. This site might not appeal to families due to lack of play facilities (play area , swimming pool etc) but if they love the outdoors they won’t go far wrong here. I will definitely be coming back next year with my pack as they are missing this site already!

Disliked: Not a dislike just a cautionary note there is no shop on site so come prepared. However Okehampton is only a few minutes drive away to the supermarkets.

Local attractions

Start off at Okehampton to see the ruins of 11th-century Okehampton Castle and explore the industrial past of Dartmoor at Finch Foundry, England’s last working water-powered forge. The Museum of Dartmoor Life, an 18th-century mill with info on the moors throughout the ages and a reconstructed Bronze Age fort and Victorian kitchen, is at the town’s West Street. Nearby Castle Drogo, ‘the last to be built in England’, is now a Grade I-listed building looked after by the National Trust, with the Trust’s highest garden, rose gardens and paths snaking below into the gorge of the Teign valley. ‘Perhaps the most famous walk in Dartmoor’ (so says the NT) is the circular walk from Castle Drogo, above the Teign and along Hunters Path to cross the river. The nearest sands are Bude and Widemouth Bay about 45 minutes’ drive away.
