  • Quiet, eco-friendly rural site surrounded by apple orchards
  • Five miles from beaches and coastal paths around Falmouth
  • Wildlife haven with orchards, willow play areas and mud kitchen
Apple orchards, a forest garden project, wildlife galore and wild camping with heaps of room to play… if all this lot ticks all your holiday boxes, you'll be chuffed with what's on offer at Chyan Farm – and the kids will likely think the mud kitchen and willow playground are out of this world too. Set close to the Cornish hamlet of Halvasso near Penryn and five miles from Falmouth, Chyan Farm is a cultural centre and community project, running a spacious wild camping site with an eco-friendly approach, in a peaceful rural valley setting surrounded by apple orchards. There are several play areas for kids in the community field, including willow structures and a mud kitchen. Guests can also buy apple juice, which is made on site. The emphasis here is on wild camping with basic amenities including compost toilets, springwater taps and hot showers in the site's solar-powered bathhouse. The owners ask guests to keep in mind that this is simple camping with simple facilities: the bathroom, while kept clean, isn't made up of gleaming tiles and you may well see a spider's web here and there. There's no site reception here but although you may not see any staff during your stay, someone is always contactable by phone if you have any queries. The centre runs regular events such as fairs, workshops and craft classes throughout the year: ask the friendly team for details of what's on offer during your stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Simple, eco-friendly campsite. It has very basic facilities - just two but well-cared for compost loos, cold water washing up sinks (two) and two solar showers. You have to take your recycling home but there is a compost pit which is great (most campsites don't have this). If you are looking for manicured grass (the field is quite "lumpy") and EHUs then this site isn't for you. But if you are looking for a warm atmosphere and people who respect and care for the environment then this is it. It is very quiet (at least when I was there). This is a simple site for people who care about nature, enjoy meeting like-minded people and who want to be closer to the elements. It is more like camping used to be be! (By the way, there are signs asking you to use eco-friendly products for example but I found these reassuring rather than intrusive.)

Disliked: Nothing but it is quite "alternative" and that is part of its charm.

Route directions

From Longdowns, turn left and go down through Halvosso into the valley, going past the Via Ferrata Adventure Centre on your left. Another quarter mile on, you'll see two wind turbines on your right. The gate to the camping field is the next gate on your right – turn left once through the gate for the camping field. If you are booking last minute or arriving late at night, you can go straight to the camping field. After driving through the village of Halvasso, the satnav will ask you to turn right. Ignore this and continue straight on. Behind two large wind turbines, there is a gateway into a small car park – you have arrived.

Local attractions

Activities and attractions to keep you occupied for weeks are within easy distance of the farm, whether you want to strike out on foot or by pedal, or drive a short distance to popular places like Falmouth and the Lizard Peninsula. A mile from base is the outdoor activity centre of BF Adventure, offering adventures in archery, zipwiring, rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, kayaking and bushcraft on a 60-acre site of countryside and quarries. You could also trot along to the horse and donkey sanctuary of the Flicka Foundation a couple of miles away, or potter around the 1,000 acres of woodland and 30 acres of estate and greenery at Enys Gardens, three miles away. More hair-raisingly, wakeboarding is available at Kernow Wake Park, also within three miles. Have a day or two in Falmouth five miles away too, for shopping, fishing and boat trips on the fab Fal river, along with a look at the 140 or so vessels of the National Maritime Museum Cornwall on the town harbour. Coastal and riverside and countryside walks are easy to access from here: hike the South West Coast Path from Penryn to Falmouth, amble around the Roseland Peninsula and St Mawes, or take the gentle four-mile trip from Falmouth to Mylor Harbour via the ferry trip from Falmouth to Flushing. Within easy driving distance, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is eight miles away at Gweek, and the spectacular walks and scenery of the Lizard Heritage Coast are within ten miles.
