  • On the edge of the Outback town of Kununurra
  • Bushwalking, watersports, horse riding and fishing all nearby
  • Pool, playground, camp kitchens and communal barbecue
Investigate the Outback, the water and golden Western Australia rum with a stay at Ivanhoe Village Resort – and that's a pretty special pool to sink into too. Just on the edge of the small Outback town of Kununurra, in the Kimberley area in north Western Australia, Ivanhoe is a few kilometres from canoeing, swimming, waterskiing and fishing at Lake Kununurra, and from bushwalking in Mirima National Park. The coast is 50 kilometres away and the border with the Northern Territory is 35 kilometres to the east. Tours and day trips to more Kimberley lakes and national parks of the Kimberley area can be booked in Kununurra (where you'll also find that Western Australia rum). Ivanhoe is a peaceful and roomy site, with a scenically set pool, a playground and a sales point for gas and ice. There are communal barbecues for cooking alfresco, and camp kitchens to sort indoor eats.

Local attractions

Wander into the town of Kununurra a kilometre away for supplies and sightseeing, such as the Celebrity Tree Park, Historical Society Museum and the Hoochery rum distillery, the oldest in Western Australia. Kununurra and its scenic surrounds are well known in Oz for their outdoor adventuring possibilities: you can hike into the Outback nearby, take a fishing or a horse riding trip from town, check out the area's waterfalls and gorges, or try watersports including canoeing, swimming and waterskiing at spectacular Lake Kununurra, three kilometres away. One excellent option from Kununurra is a boat trip around the wildlife haven of the Ord river, on the 55-kilometre river run from Kununurra to the Ord Top Dam at Lake Argyle. Crocodiles, kingfishers, bats and sea eagles can all be seen along the way, on the longest continuous daily river cruise in Australia. For bushwalking, take your Outback skills and walking boots to Mirima National Park, five kilometres away, and follow the bushwalking trails to the best spots to take in the stunning scenery of East Kimberley. The Miriuwung people have lived in this area for thousands of years, so look out too for Aboriginal rock paintings and artefacts on your way. Canoeing, paddleboarding and boat trips are at Lake Argyle, 70 kilometres away for a day trip, or you could see how Australian cattle ranches work with a look at the El Questro Wilderness Park, about 110 kilometres from Kununurra.
