  • Family-run site on a farm five minutes' drive from Wincanton
  • Glastonbury, Stonehenge and Longleat within 45 minutes' drive
  • Handy spot for journeys on the A303 or exploring the South West
In days of yore, Wincanton was often used as a stopover town where folks would change horses, eat, drink and rest on their journeys between London and South West England. These days the town is an equally convenient stopping point: close to the A303 and roughly halfway between London and Plymouth, this is a top location for exploring Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire. The folks at Sunnyhill Park and Campsite are keen to uphold this tradition; their family’s been at this farm in Riding Gate (five minutes from Wincanton) for generations. Decent slumbers should be on the cards at the peaceful pitches, and there are free hot showers and firepits available to rent on site (plus a supply of logs for sale to keep the flames crackling, and a backdrop of views out over King Alfred's Tower). During the summer, the hay field also hosts occasional music events and is home to a bar. Eats can be acquired at nearby takeaways (which also deliver to site), restaurants, cafés and country pubs, and it’s less than a mile to the nearest pub for your evening pint(s). No promises on the fresh horses front though – they do have horses here (along with sheep, goats and chickens) but the owners would rather you leave them where you find them. A mighty handy stopover it may be, but it’s also a fine place in its own right if you’ve got more time on your hands. Spend your Wincanton days cheering on the horses at the racecourse, visiting the Discworld Emporium or truffling out the tributes to Sir Terry Pratchett around the town centre. For more days out, Glastonbury, Longleat and Stonehenge are all within a 45-minute drive.

Liked: The owners had made a real attempt to make this an individual and special site. We loved it. The toilets and showers were spotless. The pitch was roomy and included a picnic table. Great views and lovely to see the goats, hens, sheep, ducks and horses.

Liked: Lovely spot. Owners really friendly. Bags of room and good hard-standing. Really near town.

Disliked: The showers and toilets were very nice but broken when we visited. You should probably double-check this if it's important for e.g. health reasons or whatever.

From the manager: Hi So glad you enjoyed us look forward to seeing you again you were lovely guests, and are most welcome But just to clarify the showers were working. We have had problems on and off (hopefully resolved) with the hot water for hand washing and washing up, and while this was the case I offered the staff kitchen with kettle and sink, but most guests boiled kettles in their campers/caravans when we've had problems I wouldn't want anyone to feel they need to check if the showers etc are working if the shower block was off line I would have cancelled the booking Thank you for your positive review it's very important for small businesses Sandy and the crew

Liked: Another lovely weekend staying here. As always a warm welcome and were shown to our pitch. A very wet weekend but between the showers we walked into Wincanton for a drink in The Dolphin. Lovely quiet site only sound is the farm animals. Would recommend a visit.

From the manager: Hi Karen I am pleased to hear that you liked the lady that checked you in. However going by the overall marks you were not impressed with the site as a whole which is a shame. On greeting you the lady concerned asked whether or not you had called as she wasn't quite sure how long you had been waiting for, you said that you had only just got off the phone to someone, you were then shown to where you were going to be based, and as far all everyone is aware there weren t any issues On parking up you had parked diagonally slightly impinging onto the next adjourning pitch and got out of the van. The lady checking you in asked you politely if you would mind parking up a bit straighter, however you chose to spit some vile language (telling her you did f@@king mind) this was at the lady you say you liked in your review?? The lady was a bit taken aback by the response but chose not to chastise you for your utter rudeness When your partner was shown the facilities, he apologised for your distasteful behaviour, saying that you had just recently bought this van and that you were’t used to it, also it was left hand drive. Your partner then asked about WIFI something we do not provide, however the lady checking you in said she would verify this adding that most people have a reasonable signal on their devices 4g etc Soon one of the other members of the Sunnyhill crew went to see you and explained again that we do not provide WIFI and do not advertise it but that mobile signals are generally good. However again there was a hostile attitude where you Karen again shouted from the camper van saying you had paid enough and we should provide wifi. £30 a night …2 guests… hard standing, EHU free showers, heating in the shower block and a view thats priceless, sorry but i dispute your review contents and feel you were not a good guest and i hope that no other potential guests are swayed by your negative scores, your bad day was taken out on people here trying to make you welcome… not kind Regards The lady who checked you in!

Liked: We both had VW vans. We wanted a simple, quiet farm campsite with basic facilities and EHU and that's exactly what we got. The bonus was the amazing view. The toilets and washing up facilities were clean and close to the pitches. The owner was friendly and helpful. We were the only ones there so it was idyllic and we really enjoyed our short stay.

Local attractions

Devotees of Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books flock to Wincanton, not only to peruse the bits and bobs at the Discworld Emporium but also to hunt out the various tributes around the town; having been officially twinned with Ankh-Morpork, there are now several Discworld street names and a themed pub to be seen around the place. Away from the fantasy world, real-life creatures can be seen in action at the racecourse (10 minutes’ drive) or on a drive through Longleat safari park (half an hour). If it’s motors that get you going, take the 15-minute drive to the Haynes Motor Museum instead. Those with a sense of the mystic may like to peruse the famed slabs of Stonehenge (35 minutes) or head to Glastonbury Tor (45 minutes) to consider the legends that surround the ancient site. Less shrouded in mystery but still mighty pretty for a wander are the house and gorgeous gardens at National Trust-owned Stourhead (15 minutes).
