Stay for a few days or for the whole season: there's always something going on at this jewel of an Alaskan resort. Run by the friendly Martin family who've been in the business for three generations, Diamond M Ranch Resort on Alaska's scenic Central Kenai Peninsula is stuffed with things to do on and off site. As an active and outdoorsy lot, the Martins know their stuff when it comes to Alaskan activities, so can direct guests to expert fishing guides, top fishing holes and the best hiking spots. The family are also active in their local community and are partners with several local businesses and groups to help guests get the most out of their stay. Diamond M is a working ranch between Soldotna and Kenai, on the Kenai Peninsula overlooking the Kenai river, within easy reach of day trips to Seward and Homer. It runs guided mountain tours every week in summer, as well as tours around the farm where all ages can meet the cows, horses, llamas, pigs, chickens, geese and the rest of the menagerie. This big resort is well kitted out with leisure options and facilities, like frisbee golf, kids' horseback rides, a playground and free wifi. There's a general store, ice machine and propane and firewood sales too, and – as you really should angle while in Alaska – a fish cleaning station to get your catch ready for cooking. Organised evenings at the ranch include a campfire and s'mores social and a potluck social from mid June to mid August. If you're musically minded, you're encouraged to share your skills; if not, sit back, sample the fresh fish and then clamber to the viewing deck to look out for eagles, caribou and the occasional bear.

Local attractions

Free mountain hikes are scheduled once a week for resort guests, but if you're champing at the bit to get out and explore before that, the family can arrange guided hikes for an extra charge (minimum of two people, please). Also available are guided fishing trips, at various spots on the salmon-stuffed Kenai and Kasilof rivers, and ocean fishing for halibut in the waters of the Cook Inlet. If you prefer more placid pursuits, source out information on the Diamond M self-guided amble, leaving from the ranch to wander a peaceful half mile to the Kenai river, or book a guided tour to take you around the most popular spots of the peninsula. Tours can be tailored to your tastes. Kenai town is four miles away and Soldotna five for shopping and restaurants.
