  • Eco-friendly modern lodges in a valley setting an hour from Chiang Mai
  • Jungle trekking, elephant trips and bamboo rafting all available
  • Colourful and cosy restaurant and bar on site
As a seasoned traveller, of course you'll be heading to Thailand at some point. And of course you'll be heading up north while there (after your intro to the country on Bangkok's Khao San Road then your sandy days around the coast of the south), to the splendid and colourful Chiang Mai, its hundreds of Buddhist temples and its lengthy history including as the former capital of Lann Na. It's a must-see, so add it to your itinerary forthwith. And if you seek a peaceful and eco-friendly place to bed down at in between all the Chiang Mai sightseeing? Head to Karen Eco Lodge just over an hour away: a private and secluded place in a valley surrounded by forest and rivers, and with a strong stress on preserving natural resources to minimise tourist impact on the local environment. There are so many splendid options here you'll probably end up staying a tad longer than planned – not, of course, a hardship on this part of the planet... You can go jungle trekking on a half-day tour (picked up and dropped off from the site), go bamboo rafting close by, visit the local elephant camp, or amble around the local villages within 10 to 15 minutes' walk. Then retreat to your swish lodge for lazy evenings: all have small balconies attached, with screen doors and windows, and you can leave the doors open to fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle. A bathroom with toilet, hot and cold shower and soap and shampoo provided are also at each lodge. The site also has a colourful and cosy restaurant and bar – perhaps also for lazy evenings...?

Local attractions

Book a bamboo rafting tour to cool off in the waters of the Mae Win river a few kilometres away, on a trip of one to two hours that you can set off on from the site any time between 9am and 3pm. More actively, jungle trekking is available on half-day trips, setting out at lunchtime. It's five minutes' drive from the site to reach the Mae Wang Elephant Camp, which places emphasis on the wellbeing of its elephants and offers rides led by mahouts. The camp also has a private area with waterfalls for swimming and sunbathing. Karen Eco Lodge is in the rice region that gave Lann Na its nickname as the kingdom of a million rice fields; the team can demonstrate rice production to guests.
