  • Parkland site 4km from the beaches and historic centre of Peñíscola
  • Close to the Serra d'Irta Natural Park for walks and cycling
  • Pools, spa, restaurant, bar and beekeeping courses
Whatever flavour you wish your Spanish stay to be, you're sorted at Spa Natura Resort. Cycling, nature spotting, beach days, watersports and city sightseeing are a teeny sample of what's around this smashing part of Castellón – and that's without even looking at the vast range of things to get stuck into on site. (Several pools, a spa and beekeeping, just for action-packed starters.) Location first? Spa Natura Resort is four kilometres from the fine sandy beaches and spectacular centre of ancient Peñíscola, the city seaport on the Costa del Azahar, and two kilometres from the Serra d'Irta Natural Park. Hiking and biking routes galore are round the natural park and heaps more are in the Valencian countryside (other national parks are within easy day trip distance). Or might you fancy the beach instead? Dive into watersports like jetskiing, windsurfing and scuba diving from the sands of Peñíscola's first-rate beaches. Site next? Hold on to your (sun) hat, for there's simply stacks to do at this fab family site. Among the huge range of leisure facilities are several themed swimming pools with waterslides and other installations, a multisports court, a playground, a pétanque court and a padel tennis court, to keep all ages occupied for aeons. Too much activity? Sink into a session at the spa and wellness centre or – an addition that should have anyone buzzing – take a class at the on-site beekeeping school. A restaurant, takeaway and cafeteria take care of the food; for drinks, head to the bar and its entertainment such as quiz nights, live music and karaoke. And finally? If you have over-excited offspring who need to burn off some energy, a busy programme of daytime activities for kids of all ages runs in summer too.

Local attractions

The beaches at Peñíscola are famed throughout Spain, particularly the main north beach with five kilometres of sand and calm waters for swimming and canoeing. Scuba diving, jetskiing, sea kayaking and windsurfing are all available around Peñíscola, mainly from the watersports centre at the smaller south beach. Peñíscola is probably even more famed for its sights than its beaches: the 'city in the sea' is a fortified seaport on a high headland dating back to Iberian times: go and gawk at its 13th-century castle built by the Knights Templar. Just over an hour inland, the Benifasar Tenure Natural Park has a wealth of wildlife including mountain goats and wild boars, and a rock painting making up part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the rock art of the Mediterranean arch of the Iberian peninsula: try saying that after you're puffed out from a climb in the park…
