Might you fancy ambling around magnif Madrid but also having maximum euros for souvenirs and sangria? Have a stay at Camping Park Arco Iris for a capital Spanish hol, as it's only 18 kilometres from Madrid and has excellent bus and metro links connecting it to the city centre. Days around Madrid's museums, art, markets and old churches beckon loudly from this family- and group-friendly site, but when you're up for a less busy vibe, its setting in the university town of Villaviciosa de Odón has it well placed for lazy evenings and eating out – or for plotting your next day's trip into the city via the town's tourist info office…? (Highly possible to be highly tempting: Madrid has a mighty amount of things to see.) The site facilities are well placed for lazy days around too, with a seasonal pool and a paddling pool for splashing for all ages, a Jacuzzi and a sauna for relaxed high season soaking, and a sports ground and pétanque court for when you're feeling slightly more active. Kids are sorted at the playground, ping pong table and summer activity club, and all ages at the big recreation room for games and socialising. The café-restaurant specialises in traditional cuisine as well as grilled meat and barbecues, to have indoors or on the roomy terrace. Takeaway is available too or there's a supermarket to sort your own nosh; barbecues are allowed on site. Amenities include a launderette and toilet and shower blocks powered by solar energy. The site has free wifi.

Local attractions

Ah, spectacular Madrid, a place you'll likely want to spend several weeks in, whether you're a museum sort or an art aficionado, a fan of old buildings or an ambler around city parks. Listing all the highlights of Madrid would take nearly as long as pottering around them, but among the must-sees are the Royal Palace of Madrid and the Royal Theatre, Plaza Cibeles and its fountain, the buzzing main square of the Puerta del Sol and its famed bell clock, and old churches including Almudena Cathedral and San Nicolás de los Servitas. Art fan? You're in the right place: get along to the Golden Triangle of Art, the three art museums set along the Paseo del Prado, for the famed Prado Museum with works by Velázquez and Goya among many more; the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum with its private collections, and the Reina Sofía Museum with Picasso's enormous and very famed Guernica. For family days, have topping times in the Zoo Aquarium de Madrid, the Parque de Atracciones de Madrid amusement park in the Casa de Campo, and Parque Warner Madrid, the theme park 25 kilometres southeast of the city.
