‘I must go down to the seas again,’ sighed poet John Masefield in his 1902 classic Sea Fever. He’d have found it easy to go to the sea as much as he liked if he’d spent his hols at Càmping Bonavista, a family site on the outskirts of the small resort of Calella. The sea in question is of course the Mediterranean, and you can not only see it but wholeheartedly launch yourself into it from the beach just over the road from the site. There’s direct access to the small sandy beach via a footpath, and it's only 10 minutes further to reach the larger town beach if that's what you prefer. (A naturist beach is between the two, so make sure you turn the right way if you want to avoid a surprise – or if you care to merrily join in by casting your clothes asunder.) You can splash about too at the site’s outdoor pool with various fountains and waterfalls; kids have their own shallow pool alongside. Keep an eye on them from the sun loungers on the terrace around the pool area; there are plenty of trees and parasols for shade too. Other leisure options include a playground, a TV and games room, and sports areas for football, padel and pétanque. There's a restaurant too, along with a bar and outdoor terrace.

Local attractions

If seeing the sea has made you want to spend more time in or on it, pay a visit to the watersports centre at Calella, where you can sign up for a wide range of aquatic activities, including sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, paddleboarding, snorkelling and scuba diving. Lessons and kit hire are also available. For historic attractions, take a walk to Las Torretas (10 minutes), military towers that were constructed in the mid-19th century. The buildings themselves are fairly ruined now but it’s a good place for kids to stage family battles and there are some great coastal views from here as well. If you need a little bit of shelter on a hot day, head underground to the Refugio Antiaereo, the town’s air raid shelter, now opened up as a museum with a short film showing Civil War survivors talking about their experiences of spending time in the tunnels. You could also call in to the Museum of Tourism, which tells the story of how Calella became a tourist resort, as well as looking at the development of mass tourism around the world. Away from the resort itself, the setting is well placed for a day trip to Barcelona; take the train from Calella and an hour later you can be ambling down Las Ramblas…
